Preface
Kevin and I set out to write this book about eight years ago, before we knew where we would be today. During the time that the concept had come to us and we were just rolling the idea around, we were still not in a great place with our marriage or finances. We were getting better but not in a position where we would think people would take notice or care about our life’s testimonies.
Here we sit financially and spiritually stable with a marriage that has more respect than it has ever had before. Our lives are not perfect, and they won’t be until we see those pearly gates. However, we feel like God has set us apart from the pain and destruction we once knew for a purpose. And now is the appointed time to be a help to anyone who chooses to read this book.
We would not be in the position we’re in without the love of our church, Souls Harbor First Pentecostal Church of Belleview, Florida; our pastor, Jason Varnum; his beautiful wife, Hollina Varnum; or his parents, James and Naomi Varnum, who had started pastoring the church almost fifty years ago. Their love for our family is more valuable than anything we could invest in this world, and for that, we are forever grateful.
We are thankful to all those who have extended their hands and prayers toward our family. I can’t possibly name everyone, but there are definitely key players: Sis Denee Richardson, worship leader, Bible-study teacher, and the one who started the Daughters of Zion work; Bro and Sis Autrey, who loved our family and prayed for us when we didn’t know how to pray for ourselves; and Bro Kevin and Sis Rebecca McElroy, who were sensitive enough to the Holy Spirit to invite me to church and our family into their home week after week for fellowship and Bible studies. I’m thankful to Teresa Billingsly, my friend, mentor, and sounding board through life and during this project; and Angel Craig, a friend who has been through the trenches with me during our hardest battles.
This book has some hard stories in it. It is not meant to shame or hurt any family or friends, but it is to help encourage someone who is hurting. It’s to show those who are dealing with drug and alcohol
