Fitzpatrick and His Brand-New Thingumadoodle
Songfish are singing in the soft gulfweed.
Northern puffers glide past seagrass forest.
Roosterfish begin gurgling, It’s morning! Good morning!
It looks like another wonderful day in the deep, deep ocean.
All the fish on Algae Avenue are happy.
Well, almost every fish.
Fitzpatrick, a small fish, but not the smallest in the ocean, is just waking up.
"Oh! Ouch!" he cries as he tries to bend his back.
Fitzpatrick’s bed is old and broken, and there is no getting away from the fact that it feels like an oyster shell.
Who wants to sleep on a bed that feels like an oyster shell?
After taking off his nightcap and putting on his preferred day cap, Fitzpatrick swims out the front door and down Algae Avenue.
A turn to the left, a turn to the right, and then another left.
Finally, he comes to his favorite quiet spot. He stretches his fins and curls up his tail to watch the others in the distance.
The ocean is such a big place,
Fitzpatrick says to himself. But I think I will always enjoy this little space the best.
As Fitzpatrick is about to leave, a funny-looking object suddenly appears in front of him. Oh, uh, I’m sorry.
Fitzpatrick apologizes without thinking, then wonders, Is this thing alive?
The more Fitzpatrick looks at the baseball glove, the more he wonders, What is this thingumadoodle?
I think I’m going to ask my older brother what it could be. Morganblue should know about this thingumadoodle,
Fitzpatrick decides.
The thingumadoodle is twice the size of Fitzpatrick. Carefully, he grabs the odd-looking object and swims in the direction of his brother’s house.
All the while making sure he doesn’t disturb the many sleeping starfish on the way.
When Fitzpatrick turns onto Sponge Path, he sees Morganblue, basking on his front porch, slurping a sweet seaweed sundae.
Hey, little brother! Where in the salty sea did you find that old snail shell?
Morganblue blurts out. Morganblue has a bad habit of trying to eat and talk at the same time.
That old snail shell has got to be one hundred thousand years old!
Fitzpatrick’s brother stops only for a shrimp moment, then continues talking and eating. "Hey, Fitz, you know, that old thing is worthless, don’t you? It’s as worthless as a freckle-faced swordfish
