About this ebook

Who wants to wash dishes when they can be a hero?

Katt Scallion is overjoyed when he's asked to save a planet of sharks. It's a chance to escape his dish-washing job – maybe forever – get back his spacecraft, and return to space-pirating.

But Katt finds himself in the middle of a war that has raged between the two tribes of sharks for the last one thousand years. The planet is dying around them. And everything Katt does seems to make the situation worse…

Can Katt save the sharks – and get off the planet – before it is too late?

Warning! Contains a super-awesome shark-shaped submarine, a starfish with a secret, a soppy love-sick sloth, and sharks galore. And those are just the things starting with 'S'! Read only if you like funny, action-packed adventures.

    SHARKS IN TROUBLE!

Speedy Sloth handed Katt Scallion a pile of dirty dishes. Only a hundred more.

Plates? asked Katt as he submerged the stack into the soapy water.

No. Only a hundred more years of washing dishes until we’ve paid back the bank.

Katt sighed. After their last mission hunting down oracle bird eggs, their finances had plummeted. They now owed tons of credits. But it was worth it. The oracle bird eggs had hatched into three cute baby birds: Malcolm, Marigold, and Morris. Katt smiled as he handed the soapy plate to Malcolm, who held a dish-towel in his beak.

Wee! said Malcolm as he raced around the plate with the dish-towel.

Let your brother or sister dry the next one, said Katt. Marigold and Morris were perched on the kitchen shelf, eagerly awaiting their turn to help with the dishes.

Aren’t we supposed to be cleaning these plates? said Speedy. He’s covering them with feathers!

Katt shrugged. Since we’ll be washing dishes for the rest of our lives, we might as well have fun.

Malcolm finished drying the plate and tossed the dish-towel up to Marigold and Morris.

Marigold snatched it first. Morris pecked her.

    WAAAAAH! cried Marigold.

    Peck him back! said Katt.

Two wrongs don’t make a right, said Speedy.

I’m not sure about that, said Katt. If I think I’m wrong, but I’m wrong about being wrong, then I’m right. Two wrongs can make a right.

You’ll confuse the babies, said Speedy. Apologize to your sister, Morris.

Morris stood up straight, and his eyes bulged. Sharks!

Katt scratched his head. That’s not much of an apology, young fellow.

Marigold stood up straight, too. Sharks! Sharks!

    Sharks in trouble! said Malcolm.

The three birds started chanting together: Sharks in trouble! Sharks in trouble! Sharks in trouble!

What’s this about? said Katt. Some new YouTube video they’re watching?

Speedy shrugged. Robogirl mentioned their power to sense danger would kick in soon.

Katt’s watch tingled. He frowned. What a coincidence! It’s Robogirl calling now.

Tell her thanks for the birthday card, said Speedy. And the honey Deena sent.

I still can’t bring myself to eat that honey, said Katt. There’s something wrong about eating honey when you know the bee that made it.

He answered the call. Hello, Robogirl.

Katt! I need your help. There’s a nearby planet in trouble.

Do sharks live on this planet? asked Katt.

How did you know? asked Robogirl.

A little bird told me, said Katt. What do you need me to do?

Katt swung the kitchen door open, then trudged down the long corridor to the bank manager’s office. He needed time off work so he could help Robogirl save the planet of the sharks. But that wouldn’t make the bank manager very happy. Katt licked his paw, wiped it over his face to smooth his fur, then knocked on the bank manager’s door.

Enter, said the bank manager. She was an enormous cube robot, her eyes the size of windows.

    Katt twisted his foot. Ummm...

The bank manager leaned forward. Have you broken more dishes? How much do I need to take out of your wages?

We don’t get wages, said Katt. Everything we earn goes straight back to the bank for all the credits we owe.

I’ll add more years to your debt then, said the bank manager, a pen twitching in her metal hand. How many did you break this time? Five? Ten? With interest, I’ll add on another three years per plate.

We haven’t broken any plates, said Katt. We need some time off.

The bank manager’s eyes flashed red and her voice rocketed in volume. Is there some holiday that I don’t know about? Kitty-Cat-Christmas? Hug-a-Sloth day?

    No, but—

    Did your great aunt die?

    No, but—

    Got the space measles?

    Nothing like—

    Then NO time off.

But I need to save a planet of sharks! said Katt, at last managing a full sentence.

The bank manager’s eyes shimmered back to blue. A planet of sharks? Why didn’t you say so? You can certainly go.

Katt scratched his head. I didn’t think I’d be able to convince you that easily. Are you letting us go because you love sharks, too?

She laughed. Of course not. Sharks are beastly creatures. Mouths filled with sharp teeth that will tear you to shreds in an instant!

Then why are you allowing us to help? asked Katt.

There’s a 98.7% probability that those sharks will eat you. Then your life insurance will pay back the credits you owe to the bank.

Sharks aren’t that dangerous, said Katt.

The bank manager’s eyes flashed red again. They aren’t? Maybe I shouldn’t let you go then.

Of course you should! said Katt. Sharks are extremely deadly, and I’m sure we’ll be their morning snack within thirty seconds.

Excellent! said the bank manager. Don’t worry! I’ll use a couple of credits from your life insurance to buy flowers for your funeral.

GOOD BABYSITTERS ARE HARD TO FIND

Malcolm bored, the little bird chirped.

It shouldn’t be long now, buddy, said Katt. He hoped he was right. He’d already broken up five fights between the baby birds, and his stomach was grumbling.

"If we had the Sharky-One we could leave, instead of waiting on Robogirl to send a droid ship, said Speedy. And the bank manager only gave us three days off. If we don’t leave now, we won’t make it back to work on time."

Katt sighed. Their spacecraft—the Sharky-One—was in storage until they could pay the bank back.

After this shark-saving mission, we’ll be dishwashing no more, said Katt.

Speedy slowly arched an eyebrow. You have a plan?

Don’t sound so worried, Speedy. At least one in ten of my plans doesn’t end in death, doom, or destruction.

    What is it this time?

This planet where we are heading—Ceto—is mostly covered by oceans, right?

Yes, said Speedy. Nearly all the planet is underwater.

And where there are seas, there are ships.

    Sometimes, said Speedy.

Don’t be a party-pooper, Speedy. And where there are ships, there are shipwrecks.

You can’t know that, said Speedy.

I’m a pirate, said Katt. I have a sixth sense about these things. And where there are shipwrecks, there are treasures for the taking.

So, you plan to find treasure to pay back the bank?

Yes, then we can go back to being space pirates instead of dishwashers.

Aren’t we going on this mission to help Robogirl save these sharks? asked Speedy.

We can do that, too, said Katt. I’m a master multi-tasker.

"Are you sure about that, Katt? I remember when you were changing Morris’s diaper and eating a
