There’s always a calm after the storm when the shooting season comes to a close. There’s still value in prodding around the foreshore but serious minds have turned to the prospect of woodpigeons. I try to remember where all my kit was stashed after the preceding summer, then there is a frantic scrabble through sheds and outhouses as the days begin to lengthen.
We don’t have enormous numbers of pigeons to pursue in my part of the world. There are certainly fewer these days, now that many of the best farms have gone to intensive beef or dairy, growing nothing but grass and leaving little in the way of cereal crops. But all the same, I still have a mountain of equipment
