About this ebook

The poetry of L. H. Swiger covers many areas of life. Some are about the love of nature, some about the love of family (both of parents and children), some are patriotic, and some are about love itself. Many of them are doctrinal (or about God and the way of Salvation or Biblical Victorious Lives). Brother Swiger was greatly inspired as he wrote about the death of his little nephew in "The Angels Picked Jesus A Birthday Bouquet"; or "Victorious Victims" (following the Oklahoma City bombing); or as he wrote the one titled "Tell Your Daddy Too." Although not all were about personal events in his life, still he was often deeply motivated by a particular event that he was familiar with. This collection includes an essay about his first pastorate and the love of a place called Brushy Run, West Virginia. He has included in this volume a Christian family love poem (that tells a story) in "Just One." He also has listed about thirty maxims in this book. Brother L. H. Swiger has written approximately 580 Christian poems thus far (of these he has selected approximately seventy-seven for this book). He was born in the country, raised in the country, and has a deep lasting love of nature and family, which reflects in his poetry. He doesn't profess to be a great poet, but he is anxious to share with others what God has given him, in poetry. It is his sincere desire that you will be touched by and enjoy this edition of "Heartfelt Poetry." GOD Bless!

    Foreword

As of this date (December 28, 2017), I have written approximately 580 Christian poems. Some are about the love of God, the love of family, the love of nature, some are doctrinal, and there are some maxims; but I consider them all to be Christian.

In this particular poem book, I am only able to publish nearly eighty of them (which is a little less than 14 percent of them). I trust that I have chosen some of the best of them and that you will find them to be a blessing to you.

To read a poet’s poetry is probably the easiest way to see what is in his heart. Thus, I’m calling this volume Heartfelt Poetry by L. H. Swiger (minister).

    May God richly bless you!

    I. Children

    Only a Shell

    (Approx. 1965)

A young man refused the Lord,

    Even in his early youth,

And down through life he rejected his call,

Until in old age he did stoop.

’Tis true God is merciful, and he will save

In the sunset years of life,

But think of the souls who will go to hell

That you could’ve showed the light.

I once was taking a walk, and by chance

As I traveled on my way,

    I saw a turtle, or I thought it was;

By the side of the road it lay.

But as I picked it up to look,

The turtle wasn’t there at all!

It was only a shell! The turtle was gone!

Much like an old man’s call.

The Lord will save in old age,

But what can you offer him then?

The vigor and life of youth are gone,

And millions are still going on in sin.

So, young people, please learn from this,

For millions are going to hell:

Please turn to Christ while you can work,

    Don’t wait ’til you’re only a shell.

The Angels Picked Jesus a Birthday Bouquet

    (12/14/1969)

Copyright 1980 by Larry Homer Swiger

    TXU 37-178 (01/31/1980).

Written in loving memory of my sweet little nephew, Duane Lyle Gregory, who died December 13, 1969, at the age of four months and nine days; and read at his funeral.

    (1) Many little children,

    When Mommy’s birthday is near,

    Will begin to ponder,

What can I get her so dear?

    Though they have no gold

Or money with which to buy,

To present her the nicest gift,

    They surely will try.

    (2) They think of candy,

    Buttons and such,

But a beautiful bouquet of flowers

Is usually with what they wind up.

And so it must have been,

    In heaven this year,

    That the angels got excited

    When Jesus’s birthday got near.

    (3) What can we get him?

    Said one angel to another.

    "The love he has given

    Is greater than a mother’s.

    I don’t know,

But not much time is left.

    This is December already,

And his Birthday is the twenty-fifth."

    (4) Let‘s hurry and think,

    Another angel spoke up.

"I know! A bouquet of those flowers

    That he loves so much!

    A bouquet of flowers!

    Well, we haven‘t much time,

    But let’s pick little children,

    For that’s his favorite kind!"

    (5) So away they did fly,

    Over land and over sea

To pick a bouquet of beautiful flowers,

    For Jesus’s birthday;

Oh, no doubt they gathered several,

    From throughout the whole world,

But the beautiful bouquet still lacked

    A little blossom of joy.

    (6) It’s not complete yet,

    Spoke an angel again,

    "Another ‘precious little blossom’

    We must find for him."

    So downward again,
