About this ebook

Inspired by people who shared the beauty of laughter with her up until the day they died, Patricia Daletas recently found a way to put down on paper an accumulation of life events that led to one conclusion: Laughter comes with healing. Laughter brings joy. Laughter can be found in even the most difficult of situations. Laughter is a gift from God and can help sustain the heart for a lifetime. In her book Laugh 'til You Die, Patricia endeavors to take her readers on a journey through everyday life, with all its ups and downs, and help them to see that no matter the circumstances life might throw them into, laughter really is the best medicine. Through the sharing of personal experience and scripture, Laugh 'til You Die shows how laughter coupled with faith can bring joy to the soul, to the end of this life, and into the better life that awaits the child of God. Laugh 'til You Die is intended to be read as much or as little at a time as desired to refresh the heart. To provide hope for a weary soul and give confirmation to the life full of joy and laughter that it really is okay to be lighthearted in any circumstance.

    About the Author

In grateful memory of Doris Temple and Shar Heinz, who showed me how to laugh ’til I die.

    Chapter 1

    Thirteen Years, Six Months

That’s how long ago I first realized the best advice I would ever come up with. It took until now to put it down on paper. It seems like a lifetime ago, and in some ways, it has been. Her life. Mom’s life.

I don’t think I will ever forget the day we sat in her doctor’s office at the cancer center and heard her physician deliver the news: cancer of the liver, confirmed. Prognosis, death. Life expectancy, six months or less. There were treatments available, but their effectiveness was thought to be limited and the process would be invasive, painful, worse than the disease itself.

Our response? We looked at each other and laughed. The doctor looked at us in disbelief. Had we not heard what she said? Oh yes, we heard. But we had a better source. A better way of looking at life. Life here is only a journey to a better world.

Maybe it was just our way of dealing with life-changing news. Maybe it was her April Fool’s Day birthday that ran in her veins and was passed on to me and my siblings. Maybe laughter is just a gift. Regardless of why, that’s what we did. It’s what those of us left behind still do.

After getting set up with a hospice team, we would spend the next six months enjoying each other’s company, as we had
