Mary's Adventure with the Stars - Tom Guzick
The Family
Mary is a blond, blue-eyed eight-year-old. In September, Mary will be attending third grade. Mary enjoys school since her mom, Kandy, teaches at the school Mary attends. Mary rides to and from school with Kandy. Mary is a shy girl who really doesn’t have any close friends but instead spends a lot of her time playing with her collection of dolls. Mary will play with the other students during recess and on the weekends, when Mary and her mom would go to the park. When getting ready for bed, Mary must have her hair placed in two pigtails. One characteristic that Mary has is that, when she gets upset, she will place her right arm over her left arm with her left hand in her right armpit and right hand in her left armpit. Mary will then stare at the person who or thing that has made her upset. Mary will also do this when she is sad, except that she will stare at the floor.
Kandy teaches fourth grade and has done so for ten years. Like many teachers, Kandy really enjoys teaching especially when she sees a smile on a student’s face after a student understands the lesson for that day. Like all teachers, Kandy dislikes marking papers and making lesson plans. Kandy has lived her entire life in the city.
John, Mary’s father, works as a section boss in a nearby factory. John usually works six days a week, putting in at least forty-five hours most weeks. John was born in the country and moved to the city with his family when he was a child.
Two weeks before school starts, Mary wakes shortly after going to bed. As Mary quietly walks down the steps, she hears her mom and her dad talking in the kitchen. The only thing Mary understands is that her dad has a new job and that the family must move. Without making a sound, Mary
