    Chapter 1

It was a sunny day at Castle Alamania, in the fairy kingdom known as Midsummer Isle, when Princess Titania was in the garden tending to the roses. Titania was thin and 5 feet and 8 inches tall. She had long golden-blond hair, light skin, and brilliant lavender eyes. She wore a long green dress that hung from her shoulders; it had golden trim and various golden flowers outlined all over in delicate detail. She wasn’t wearing any shoes, and no earrings hung from her elongated ears. She did, however, wear a beautiful bejeweled tiara that sat on her head glittering in the sun.

The garden she was in had a wide variety of flowers, fruits, and vegetables that grew in abundance. The garden was very large and contained some of the rarest plants in the world. The rosebush Princess Titania was currently admiring bloomed into a wide variety of colors.

There you are! Practicing your magic? her grandfather, King Rothrin, said with a smile.

Hello, Grandfather! Yes, I was tending to the garden after meditating, Princess Titania replied with a bow.

King Rothrin was a tiny fairy, standing at only 4 feet. He was bald with a long white beard that hung to his feet with a gold ribbon tied at the end. He had bright green eyes and wrinkled light skin and was wearing a large purple robe with golden stars detailed entirely over it. Unlike Princess Titania, though, he had green butterfly-like wings that came from his back, fluttering just behind them.

Good! I know the spiritual side of magic is hard for you, but practice may help you unlock your wings, the King advised gently.

I knooowww, replied Princess Titania guiltily. But no matter what I do, nothing seems to work! Is there some other method to grow my wings?

As she asked this, Princess Titania waved her right hand, and the rosebush sprouted twice as many flowers as before. On Midsummer Isle, magic was commonplace, and every fairy that lived there used it. The variety of magic that existed was as wide as the color spectrum, and Princess Titania had a natural affinity for all magic, but her favorite type was natural magic, which meant she could harness plants and animals and create life.

I’m afraid not. Look, I know you’re frustrated, but given time, I know you will succeed. You’re not going to let a little thing like this get in your way, are you? the King asked with a sigh.

Princess Titania pumped a fist into the air. "Of course not! I will grow my wings no matter what I have to do!"

The King smiled. That’s my granddaughter. Let’s go inside. I’ve been so busy lately we haven’t seen much of one another.

Princess Titania jumped up and smiled. Okay.

Princess Titania raced over to her grandfather and walked along with him back into the castle. They laughed and talked as they walked through the lavish halls together, discussing current events and old tales. They arrived at the portrait room, where they stopped together to look at one of the most recent portraits there.

In the picture, there were three fairies, a man, a woman, and their baby nestled in a blanket. The man was 6 foot 3, light skinned, and muscular with green eyes and golden-blond hair. The woman was 5 foot 5, thin, light skinned, and had darker-blond hair and lavender eyes. The baby was mostly covered, but lavender eyes and light-pink skin could be seen on the face.

Your parents would be so proud of you, the King said sadly with tears in his eyes.

Princess Titania looked at the portrait with tears as well. I just wish I could see them once more.

The King and Princess turned to each other and hugged.

They began to walk once more, discussing the other various portraits when they came upon the Tapestry of History. The tapestry that hung was ancient, thick, and very colorful; and it depicted the history to Midsummer Isle and the fairies. Most of the scenes that were showing depicted the many fights the fairies have had with humans over the years until eighty years ago, when King Rothrin ended the conflicts and since kept an unsteady peace by isolating the country from the world.

I have always hated this thing, the King said, frowning.

Why? It magically sews images itself to record our history and culture, Princess Titania stated, bewildered.

Yeah, sure, but it looks too graphic and depressing for my tastes, The King replied matter-of-factly.

Oh, and what would you do? Princess Titania asked teasingly.

I would make a pop-up book, replace all the swords with candy canes, and make the cannons shoot sparkles! Make it very kid-friendly, answered the King.

Princess Titania laughed. Oh, sure, then everyone would think we were fighting over sweets! However, history isn’t kind. The humans attacked our island again and again, always trying to take over our lands and take our wings. No fairy will ever forget that, Princess Titania added darkly.

Oh, I know, my dear. Just a simple wish from the Loony King, the King replied simply.

Princess Titania hated the nickname people would give her grandfather. He was eccentric and odd at times but not loony.

You’re not loony, and I’ll beat anyone that says you are! Princess Titania huffed.

The King laughed. I know, my dear. Why have an army when I have you?

So what have you been working on the most? asked Princess Titania.

We were getting reports that human raiders landed on the west coast of Midsummer Isle, replied King Rothrin.

Midsummer Isle is our continent! Why can’t those humans leave us alone? What did they come for? demanded Princess Titania.

It would appear they wanted to try to steal our valuables. We captured them, but they didn’t belong to any country. Most likely they were wanted by other countries as well, answered King Rothrin.

Princess Titania snorted in derision and frustration. Grandfather, they are human, criminal or not. All they do is bring misery, destruction, and death to everyone and everything.

King Rothrin tilted his head toward Princess Titania sternly. Now that isn’t true. Many humans are good. In fact, I would say that human culture, as far as good and evil, is very much like ours.

Maybe that’s how they treat each other, but we as a race only know their cruelty, Princess Titania continued. You don’t think they had anything to do with the deaths of my parents, do you?

King Rothrin shook his head. No, my dear, I’m afraid not.

They both cried a little and hugged each other for comfort for a brief moment. They pulled apart and looked at each other with tears in their eyes before wiping them away and forcing a smile. As they both fell silent, the King began to sneeze.

Oh my! I think my allergies are acting up, he said.

The King sneezed, and daisies popped out of both his nostrils.

    Princess Titania giggled.

Oh, it appears I have some pollen in my nose! the King said and snorted loudly, making the daisies disappear in his nose and pop out of his ears.

Princess Titania giggled even harder, turning slightly red.

I’m sorry, dear, the King almost shouted. I didn’t quite hear that. Did you say something?

The King shook his head; and the daisies disappeared, only to be replaced by a small daisy sitting atop the bald man’s head. The King reached up and plucked the daisy and presented it with a bow.

A gift for you, my dear princess, he said.

Why, thank you, my good sir, Princess Titania replied, suppressing her giggles and taking the flower.

Do you know what I have been thinking about? King Rothrin asked teasingly.

No idea. What have you been thinking about, Grandfather? Princess Titania asked playfully.

I want to paint the whole castle hot-pink instead of dingy-gray. Everyone has a gray castle. It’s boring! complained the King.

Well, I think hot-pink may be a tad bit too bold. How about a nice sunshine-yellow? Or perhaps a sunset-orange instead? offered Princess Titania.

The King gasped in surprise. "My granddaughter, you are brilliant! We could paint the
