The Tales of Little Lady M - Diego Di Mauro

Once upon a time, in a distant and magic land which did not exist on any known map, there was a beautiful kingdom. The Kingdom of Oaks Bridge was its name, and it was a place full of enchanted forests, inhabited by lovely fairies, funny animals and magic creatures of all kinds. It truly was a wonderful place, hidden to the world of grownups. A place only true dreamers could find.

The large Silver River, long like it had no end, crossed the whole length of the realm. Starting high up in the Cold Mountains, winding down through dense woodlands, at times dividing the vast green plains. Its waters were crystal-clear, home to funny fishes and colourful birds.

The gossipy ducks spent the whole day tittle-tattling about the silliest of things going on all around:

    "Quack! Quack! My fellow duck,

did you hear what bad luck?!

The fatty bear was climbing trees,

trying to steal honey from bees!

But then so heavy, he fell to the ground…

You should have heard: such a scary sound!"

All the while the snooty swans spent their time admiring their charming reflections in the water:

"Just be silent, oh silly duck!

You don’t know what great luck it

is for you to swim in this river...

Look, my beauty makes it shimmer!"

Over time, men, dwarves, elves and all the other walking creatures built many bridges above Silver River, all across the kingdom. One, however, was much bigger and older than all the others; and it was a magical creation of Nature herself.

Close to the centre of the realm, two giant imposing oaks stood on both sides of the river, one right opposite the other. Legend has it that the two trees had been friends since they were just little plants. For ages they grew apart, divided by the waters, but they never stopped talking in their secret language of trees. When they finally became tall and their branches were long enough to reach each other, they were at last able to bend and join them over the river, in a sign of eternal friendship. They remained entwined like this forevermore.

It was not an actual bridge after all, but one good enough for squirrels and the other little creatures of the woodlands. The two imposing trees together became known as ‘Oaks Bridge’, and that’s how the kingdom got its name.

Years passed, so many that it is impossible to remember them all. When the time of kings came, a small but cosy castle was built not far from Oaks Bridge. Many of the kings lived in it with their queens, one after the other.

But our story begins at a time when the castle had been left abandoned for a while, on a day when a queen with no king came to inhabit it. Queen Justynella was her name:

    "Justynella, Justynella,

    does she look like Cinderella?

She’s a queen with friendly heart and

bringing fun is her joyful art. Her big

laugh can be a bit cheeky, and

    sometimes truly squeaky!"

Queen Justynella did not like hanging around in the castle all day doing nothing! She was a very busy queen indeed, and she had no servants to wait on her. Instead, she would leave the castle almost every morning to offer help in the villages nearby. With her assistance, the Kingdom of Oaks Bridge was the tidiest and prettiest it could possibly be.
