    Prologue

High above the African landscape we see elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, and lions roaming the land freely. The humans go about their day-to-day activities mostly in harmony with the earth.

Look really close there in the woods and move in a little closer. Do you see that oddly shaped mound about four feet tall with a peak on the top? Well, that is where Taira lives along with her mother and about a thousand other termites. They live in the Uranic Colony under the rule of the beautiful Queen Mother who just happens to be Taira’s mother.

This is the journey of a princess named Taira on her way to becoming a queen.

    Chapter

    1

Taira is outside on her balcony soaking up the sun, daydreaming about how she would love to be out exploring the unknown. Just a glance at her wrist sundial sends her running for the door. If I’m late again, Mother will never let me hear the end of it!

Inside the mound, Taira rushes past hundreds of termite workers wearing hard hats and busily walking along the ridges of the mound. On one side, they push carts and use pick hammers as they construct new rooms inside their mound. Along the other wall of the mound are cubbyholes with doors as far as the eye can see. These are the homes of the families of termites that live in the Uranic Colony.

Taira accidentally bumps into Mrs. Ologunja, who is watering her flowers on her windowsill. Sorry! Princess Taira yells out.

No worries, my princess, Mrs. Ologunja calls after her. It is always like that with Taira. She can almost do no wrong in the eyes of the other termites. They are usually drawn to her free-spirited personality.

Taira comes upon a couple of girl termites jumping rope. She jumps in for a few rounds and then jumps out and runs off. Finally, Taira stops just short of the door where Kwame, who is one of her royal assistants and who has her royal robe in hand, is. He scolds her as nicely as possible, You’re cutting it close again, Princess Taira.

Taira answers, Thanks, Kwame, what would I do without you? Kwame shakes his head in delight as Taira gives him a quick peck on the cheek.

Just as Taira enters, a tiny little termite wearing a helmet two sizes too big and holding an old toothpick next to his side as if it were a sword stops her. He says in the tiniest little voice, What’s the password?

With a smile in her voice, Taira says with mock seriousness, "The password of the day is please. The little termite’s eyes glow with amazement. He begins to run up the columns in the mound up to the top. He peeks into a great hall where groups of soldier termites, workers, and attendants to the queen are gathering together. The termite captain shouts, Attention!" All the soldier termites immediately come to attention. The tiny termite stands at the end of the line at attention.

The Queen Mother walks in just as Taira makes it to her post. The Queen Mother appears quite young despite her position. She is dressed in royal clothing with a large crown atop her head. She holds a scepter in her left hand.

Taira follows closely by her mother’s side, putting the final touches on her royal robe. Taira pulls the waist of her robe tight in order to reveal her hourglass shape. The Queen Mother gives her the eye of slight disapproval. Taira loosens it a bit. Taira is stunningly beautiful, and most of the male termite swoon when she walks by, so quite naturally, she feels it’s her responsibility to always maintain her appearance.

The Queen Mother looks down at the tiny termite and smiles as his helmet falls over his eyes. She reaches down and straightens it. The tiny termite looks up with great admiration in his eyes for the queen.

The Queen Mother and Taira finally walk down the red carpet looked on in adoration by the various termites in the great hall. The queen’s robe trails far behind her. They walk up to two chairs sitting on a throne. The Queen Mother sits on the larger of the chairs, and Taira sits on the smaller chair. Both chairs are covered in minerals from the earth that cause the chairs to glow in the light coming through the window.

Taira begins to stare out the window as her mother begins to speak. What is your report, Captain?

Queen Mother, the soldiers that are positioned at the northern, southern, and western edges of the Uranic Colony have reported back an all clear. Taira sighs as her mother continues to inquire. What about the east?

There is still some activity from the humans in that region, but the sergeant does not feel it’s any alarm to our colony, he reports. With concern in her eyes, the Queen Mother asks, Any other known threats?

There is talk in the land of an ant colony far from here that is attempting to gain power. But it is nothing that this great army cannot defend our people from.

The Queen Mother relaxes a little. This is wonderful news, Captain. You are dismissed.

Thank you, Your Highness. The termite captain turns to his soldiers and starts calling out cadence. Atten-hut! Left, right. Left, right, left. The soldiers begin to march out and repeat after the captain.

I don’t know but I’ve been told, termite mounds are made of gold. I don’t know but it’s been said, those anthills are made of lead. Sound off. One, two. Sound off. Three, four. Sound off. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four!

The Queen Mother looks on with pride as they exit. After the last soldier has exited the room, the Queen Mother stands to her feet. Everyone in the room holds their breath in anticipation for what the queen will say. She takes a long pause. The termites all lean in as she opens her mouth to speak. Having heard the captain’s good report, I declare today a day of celebration. Let the festivities begin! All the termites cheer. The door to the great hall opens, and termites run out to tell the others what was just said.

A loud cheer begins to move through the colony like a wave. The termites begin to enter the great hall. Many have to stand outside of the room because it is becoming
