This book goes out to my brothers and sisters: Gordon, Jim, Cathy, Richard, Judy, and Brian. Your love and support mean more to me than you will ever know. I thank God every day for you. Always stand strong for the Lord. My greatest blessing here on earth is, first and foremost, Jesus dying for my sins. As if that wasn’t enough, he blessed me with you all so my journey here would be even sweeter. I love you so much. You are some of God’s finest people. Thank you for what you have done for me. I wouldn’t be who I am today without you.

My best friend Jane taught me too add special touches when we journey through our life. We worked together at the nursing home for over twenty years. She added many special touches to the lives of our residents and coworkers. I appreciate and thank you for your wisdom through the years. Our families are truly blessed to have you.

    Glorifying God

I have worked in a Christian nursing home for twenty-seven years. The changes I’ve experienced through the years have moved me to write this book. As Christ’s servants on earth, it is our mission to care for the elderly and their caregivers.

God’s word and God’s ways are the central fact of human history. It is the central truth from which all our behavior, relationships, and philosophy flow. We pray about doing his work, but we struggle when we are living our everyday lives. We try to separate our spiritual lives from our careers. We bounce back and forth. It was never meant to be that way. We should seek to set aside all earthly issues and strive to live in the context of God’s word and his ways. All through his word, God expresses His personal care for people who are hurting. We must express genuine concern for others as we carry God’s message to them. When we do this, we faithfully represent our Father in heaven. God’s word has a transforming effect on everything it touches. All our worldly achievements mean nothing in God’s plan.

Caregiving is showing compassion, love, and support to others. God expects us to be faithful stewards and to bring Glory to him as we cultivate and keep that which he has entrusted to us. This includes all the people he puts into our lives. God is about showing compassion and love more than worldly gain. He gives us many examples of compassion and love in his word. One instance is the story of the widow’s mite found in Luke 21:1–4:

And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these [gave] out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had. (Lk. 21:1–4, New King James Version)

How is it that according to God, she gave more than anyone? God was looking at her heart, her faith, and her trust in him. The widow’s mite isn’t about money, it’s about the service we give to God and others. He takes what little we have to offer and blesses it beyond what we could ever imagine. God has given us our personalities and spiritual gifts and placed us in our communities for a divine purpose—to share the one message of Jesus and
