    About The Author

    Russian Construtivism & Social Design

In our contemporary society we can understand in a much clearer way, not only each of these subjects individually, but also how they relate to each other; how social design itself has emerged in Russian constructivism. So, to begin our studies, I believe it is not only right but necessary that we understand that this relationship resulted in the emergence of ideas never before proposed to the world.

To put it concisely, we can say that Russian constructivism dealt with an aesthetic-political movement that began in Russia in 1913. It was part of the bigger context of avant-garde movements across the country and of strong influence on Western architecture and art.

In 1917, during the fall of Czar Nicolau II and the beginning of the Russian revolution, a school was born, but it took shape in 1920, the school Vhkutemas.

And why do I say it only took shape in 1920?

Because of the fact that, between 1917 and 1918, the school was made up of just a few artistic workshops (or free studios), and it was only in the aforementioned year of 1920 that it came to possess the so-called superior studios, becoming, as it were, a university of art and technique which, in a way, it already was.

When we talk about Vhkutemas, we are talking about a series of colleges that taught graphic production, architecture, show costuming…etc. Some of the important names in design have their origins there. And its position at the forefront of Russian constructivist and suprematist matters is of crucial importance in our studies.
