INTRODUCTION
Road outlineWhy the name Wake, Wait, Walk? It best describes how I saw my journey play out over the last four years. Not so obvious though, is that this cycle or process is ongoing and consists of several phases, stages, and pages.
It’s the Wake up to our need for God and the non-negotiable requirement of Submission.
It’s when we Wait on the Lord that we grow to love Him and learn to appreciate and agree in Obedience.
It’s through our Walk in the Spirit, which we develop from inside out our competence and authority as Sons of God, that we learn the beautiful secrets of Dependence.
Wake up to the gift of Submission
Wait on and in Obedience
Walk in Dependence
Isn’t that the measure, treasure, and pleasure of The Faith; Submission, Obedience, and Dependence (SOD) on God? However, seeing that very few of us like to submit, obey, or depend on others, how can we achieve this, maintain this, and not sabotage the treasures and promises of SOD?
Yes, in addition to the above, I had questions and disconnections that bothered me. What I knew at the time was that I was well on my way in the Christian life, but it was becoming harder and stricter for me. God has a way of causing even the simplest and smallest of things to weigh on us, so we are pushed out of our comfort zones.
So, the question on the table is - how can we achieve and maintain submission, obedience, and dependence when we are naturally averse to them?
That was my honest concern and question to God, and below I summarize how and what was His response.
He responded to me in a dream and said, Let’s go below the sod and into the soil.
I had no clue at the time because I did not know what a sod was or whose soil we were exploring, but I knew to pay attention to anything God.
What was referred to as SOD, in this revelatory dream, was on the ground, resting on the soil. You could see that the soil was the foundation of the SOD. I went below the SOD and into the soil below, and there I saw what looked like an encasing, something that reminded me of a womb. I returned to the surface and there I saw the SOD as three pillars extending from the ground. The pillars each had a wording—Submission, Obedience, and Dependence.
That was when it hit me that SOD was an acronym for Submission, Obedience, and Dependence. Knowing my intentional God, the order of presentation was also a clue. I later realized that the soil represented the heart, and the encasing in the soil was the key God was showing me. This very important key was the womb of fellowship and mentorship. It is from our hearts that the other areas of our lives are birthed and groomed, including our walk with God.
God was addressing my concern and my fear, by showing me how to stay submitted, obedient, and dependent on Him.
He showed me that the recipe to maintain the SOD posture was to have and maintain unbroken fellowship with Him.
Fellowship in spirit and heart.
Underneath the surface is that secret place where our hearts can be bare but not ashamed. It’s that place of truth where we are forged and made new; a place where it is just Christ and me, or Christ and you.
It is through this fellowship that our hearts are unburdened, our hope is lifted, we walk in holiness, and we agree with the will, way, and Word of God.
A disciple of Christ must have unbroken fellowship with God to become practiced under His mentorship.
To respond in submission, obedience, and dependence, our hearts and minds must first agree with the will, way, and Word of God. Holiness must be our standard. Our hearts must carry a posture of repentance and we must also exist in an atmosphere of hopeful expectation. But know this - it is our responsibility to manage, guard, and yield our hearts to God.
When we intentionally agree with God, maintain holiness, live in hope, and with a repentant heart, the fruit called SOD - submission, obedience, and dependence - will be automatically produced. The womb of fellowship is where and how we develop and mature in The Faith.
When I woke from that dream and googled the word sod, I could only smile in delight as I considered God’s intentionality and the special space of adventure we shared. How fitting, and so like God, that SOD was not just an acronym but a word that
