Complete Guide Fire Bellied Newts - Reptile Fanatics

    Introduction

Fire-bellied newts, also known as Cynops pyrrhogaster, are a species of amphibian that are native to China and Japan. They are known for their vibrant orange and black belly, which gives them their name. These newts are a popular pet among amphibian enthusiasts, but they do require special care to thrive in captivity.

Housing: Fire-bellied newts should be kept in a terrarium that mimics their natural habitat as closely as possible. A 20-gallon tank is appropriate for a group of 2-3 newts. The terrarium should have a water area and a land area, with a water depth of about 2-3 inches. They also require a basking spot, which can be achieved by providing a small island or a piece of wood for them to climb on and dry off. The terrarium should be kept at a temperature between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit and have a humidity level of around 70%.

Substrate: The terrarium should have a substrate that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. A good option is a mix of peat moss and coconut fiber, which holds moisture well and mimics the newts' natural habitat. The substrate should be kept moist, but not wet, to prevent mold growth. Live plants can also be added to the terrarium to provide hiding spots and natural beauty.

Water: Fire-bellied newts require a water area in their terrarium, but it's important to keep the water clean and free of contaminants. The water should be changed weekly and any uneaten food should be removed promptly to prevent it from rotting. A filter
