About this ebook

'A wonderfully inspiring story … an education in every part of preparing for this epic ride' Guy Kesteven, author of the Cycling UK King Alfred's Way guidebook

What's it really like to cycle King Alfred's Way? Is it a piece of cake, or rather harder than that?

Julia Goodfellow-Smith was a non-cyclist just six weeks before she and her mountain biking friend Alison set off on this epic 350km route around southern England. Follow Julia's sometimes bumpy journey from cycling novice to riding King Alfred's Way itself.

In Cycling King Alfred's Way: A Piece of Cake? you'll discover what each section of the route is like to cycle, as well as strategies to:

  • Plan your adventure.
  • Make cycling more comfortable.
  • Reach the top of hills without stopping or pushing.
  • Carry on when things get tough.
  • Stay healthy.

Whether you're an experienced cycle tourer or rookie like Julia, learn from her mistakes – and her successes – to make your next bikepacking adventure the best possible success.

    About the Author

    Foreword

Cycling King Alfred’s Way represents so many things for different people. For some, it’s a way to engage all their senses as they ride through the beautiful countryside between some of the most iconic sites in the UK. For experienced cyclists, it’s a chance to ride 350km along a carefully curated route that brings out the best of Salisbury Plain, the Ridgeway, the Surrey Hills and the South Downs.

For non-cyclist Julia Goodfellow-Smith, it was a perfect choice for her latest bucket list challenge. This wonderfully inspiring story follows her personal journey through spin class training and a literal crash course in off-road riding with her King Alfred’s Way partner and mountain bike mentor, Ali. But it’s more than just a look back at her adventure. It’s also an education in every part of preparing for this epic ride, written in a way anyone can understand and everyone will enjoy.

    A Spin Through Time

King Alfred’s Way. The name is beguiling in itself, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. The route does not just pass Alfred The Great’s birthplace (Wantage) and final resting place (Winchester), but sites from throughout England’s history. As you cycle King Alfred’s Way, you skirt the mystical stones of Stonehenge and Avebury, numerous Iron Age hill forts and two cathedral cities. You cross sparkling chalk streams flanked by flint and thatch cottages. You mount the hulking mass of Salisbury Plain and pick your way along the northern edge of the Berkshire Downs. You descend the gentle Thames Valley and crunch through the gravelly woodlands of Berkshire before sinking onto the sandy soils of the Surrey Hills. And finally, you climb onto the unyielding chalk of the South Downs with spectacular views over the English Channel.

As soon as I heard about King Alfred’s Way, I was hooked.

‘Look, Ali. Have you seen this? It’s a new cycling route. It’s 200 miles long and mainly off-road. Shall we ride it together?’

    ‘OK, let’s do it!’

This book tells our tale of tackling King Alfred’s Way,
