Peak riding

As I near the top of Mount Buffalo on the final day, I peer at the stunning alpine landscape and feel a huge sense of tranquility. I’m in my happy place. To do it with an awesome group of women only heightens my sensations. It’s nearly time to head home, but I’m not ready. The Ride High Country Women’s 3 Peaks Weekend – quite the mouthful – based in Bright, Victoria has been one of the best. I need to stay a little longer.

It has been a while since I’ve escaped the city with little more than cycling on the itinerary, and while I feel the effects of conquering the surrounding slopes, I also feel refreshed. It’s impossible not to feel relaxed here. Separated from the urban critique of: which bike, which kit, what average speed, and ‘did you get any Cups?’ has quite likely helped me achieve some PBs. Not that I’ve been looking… much.

Our group arrived in late November (before fires ripped through the region) with a common objective and little else: to conquer three monster peaks in three days. But as I get to know this diverse bunch of women, I soon learn we also share much more. By the weekend’s conclusion, we’d be bound by the added achievement of reaching the summits of Falls Creek, Mount Hotham and Mount Buffalo.

Convince me

Cycling provides the opportunity to travel to new places. It’s not what got me into the sport
