    The author Kazuo Ishiguro first visited Japan in 1989–almost 30 years after his family immigrated to the United Kingdom. He was part of the Japan Foundation Short-Term Visitors’ Program that sent several participants to the Asian country. Ishiguro spent most of his life with the British, contrary to his parents’ initial plan to return to Japan after a year.

    Klara and the Sun is a story set in a dystopian fantasy world where people and robots live together. Children are either genetically modified (lifted) or not (unlifted). Those born into families belonging to the upper-class often have Artificial Friends or AFs that would accompany them into adulthood. These companions are solar-powered robots possessing their own intelligence, whose version varies according to their generation model. The story is narrated in the eyes of Klara, the AF protagonist.

    In the first chapter, the female AFs Klara and Rosa are newly installed robots in a store. They are accompanied by a male AF named Rex. The three AFs are not located near the window where they can directly feel the
