Before You Read

This was one of my favorite folktales growing up. I hope English-language students from Ukraine will take pride sharing this story with their classmates. Perhaps it can lead to a broader discussion of some features of Ukrainian culture. The swallow is a common bird in folk tales from Ukraine, as are dumplings and other foods.

As I write this, in early 2021, Ukraine is at war. I hope that this story will help people make a connection to the news. Kids often enjoy learning something about places or people at war, for example. And perhaps it will allow Ukrainians to share something else about their
