    1. THE DRIVE

    W here are we going again? Devon asked from the backseat of his father’s Jeep Wagoneer as it swerved around corners of a winding road in the mountains of Vermont.

    Up north, buddy! The wilderness. . . ooooooh spooky, his dad replied in his best ghost impression. We’re almost there, just keep yourself buckled up. You too, Missy. He reached back to grab his daughter’s leg while she kicked in her car seat. Missy loved this game and tried to reach her dad’s leather seat which was just out of range of her blue Keds sneakers.

    Missy stop, he’s driving! Devon reminded her with a stern look.

    Missy stop, he’s dwiving, she sassed back with her mouth askew.

    Don’t be retarded, Devon said. The Jeep suddenly jerked to the right and slowed down to a halt. Missy’s head hit the side of her car seat and sent her favorite toy, a Rubik’s cube, flying onto the floor. She began to cry as Colson put the Jeep into park and turned around to face his kids.

    Hey, we don’t use that language. Ever. You got that? he asked. Devon shook his head yes. He was a bright twelve year old who loved reading and drawing comic books. They were his life, and his escape.

    And you, Missy. You know you’re not supposed to say that word, right? You okay? He patted her right knee as she inhaled deeply between sobs. Her cheeks were completely soaked from tears. Devon, you got a tissue?

    No dad. Oh, wait! Here. He handed him a Kleenex box from under Missy’s seat. Colson unbuckled his seatbelt so he could completely turn around, giving his full attention to his daughter. You baby her, you know, Devon said flatly.
