      Leroy Barnes had to go to the Quick Stop Market one-half mile away. In a town as small as Plunkett, New Mexico, that was not far. It was a good thing, too, because Leroy’s pickup truck wasn’t running worth a damn. He would have spent more on gasoline than he would have at the Quick Stop Market. On foot, he’d make it there and back in about an hour.

      Plunkett, New Mexico, is a small town. You can throw a rock as far as you can, left and right, front and back, and pretty much hit the outskirts of the place. Three thousand people populate Plunkett. Most of them are hard-working blue collar workers. Leroy is on the lower end, working part time at the town’s only gas station, Fred’s Gas.
