    He was by nature a man to smile and to laugh. But just now he was thinking about how to kill himself.

    Ryker was on his last ration of chocolate, staring blankly at a wide green valley below him. That he had missed landing upon it was inexcusable, considering his training; but that he had survived putting his aircraft down on the outer fringes of a jungle was miraculous.  

    By his reckoning, it had been two hours since crashing; and it was now late morning. The sky was clear and blue, cloudless. The sun serene. No breeze.
