About this ebook

It was a normal day, with nothing to indicate that it would mark the beginning of something that would have far-reaching consequences for the rest of my life. Everyone had their own taste, whether it was Klara, Sandra, or Lara, but what they all had in common was that they represented three generations from the same house.

    Chapter 1

There's an old saying that if you step outside the door, adventure may await you, or something like that.

To be honest, it can happen, in reality it rarely happens and above all, you don't suspect it beforehand. I felt the same way when I got dressed as usual in the morning for a walk before breakfast. A few weeks ago I had started to exercise, realizing that sitting all day was not good for my body. The next easiest option was to afford sporty kicks and rush through the park all the time. He wasn't far away, so it was ideally situated to torment under his trees.

In the beginning, my sporting success was modest, my body, which had been falling apart for years, first had to recognize that I wanted good things for it. He struggled, pretending he couldn't breathe, his legs gave out for prolonged exertion. But the more I did it the better it got and within a short time I was able to walk the main path around the park without sitting on a bench panting.

From then on it was still not fun, but it was bearable and I could concentrate more on nature, noticed when flowers bloomed, leaves changed color or saw the animals of the forest.

I wasn't alone in this exercise, especially since I showed up at the same time every time. Others did as well, either taking a walk or, like me, panting across the paths to get their bodies moving. Over time, people got to know each other and nodded to each other or said a short monosyllabic greeting, then trotted on.

I quickly realized that I had been lucky in life. As a self-employed person, I could afford to run if and when I wanted. Most of the others either came later, in the afternoon, or were older, i.e. retired. I called them gray racers, a special people who struggled in old age to maintain their vitality. With some I wasn't sure if they would fall over right away, others didn't seem to mind, on the contrary, they were more athletic than me, looked healthy and vital.

Just like the lady I had noticed several times, whose age I had difficulty judging. Her naturally gray hair revealed that she was not the youngest anymore. She was always dressed smartly, as far as one could speak of running clothes, gave the impression that she enjoyed every day. Even when she ran, exhausting herself in the last few meters, she seemed fresh and happy. She often smiled at me when we met, nodded at me and jogged past me.

Everything was as it always was that day when I prepared to make my rounds. Arrived at the park, I briefly stretched my muscles, as it should supposedly be good, which I was never convinced of, and trotted slowly, always the same way. I could have run him blind. It was like a drug to me by now, I barely noticed the legs moving, they seemed disconnected from my body. So my attention was on everything else.

At that moment, the said lady came towards me, looked worried, looked backwards several times.

I wondered, didn't really think about it. It wasn't until she was level with me that the riddle was solved. Behind her, twenty yards away, ran an older man whose cause I didn't recognize at first. It wasn't until she spoke to me that I became aware.

Young man, please wait a minute!, she addressed me and I stopped immediately, she too and looked around again for the gentleman who slowed down, then accelerated and jogged past us.

She eyed him thoughtfully, and only when he was out of earshot did she focus on me.

Thank you! she said and I didn't know, guessed, why. Nevertheless I asked.

    For what?

I wasn't sure if he was following me. You know, as a woman alone in the park. There are not many people out and about in the morning and it is noticeable when someone you do not know follows you for a long time!

She was right about that, I had thought the same thing. I looked in the direction he had gone and nodded.

Yes, sometimes strange people on the way. I've never seen him either. Which doesn't mean that I want to claim that he's that type! I formulated cautiously and she nodded.

Maybe I'm doing him an injustice, but there's no harm in being careful!

But you don't know me either! I interjected and she shook her head.

No, not personally, but we have often met. The world can't just be full of bad men. They don't look like they mug older ladies! she said, putting on a mischievous smile, which I liked.

Who knows, maybe I'm a seducer who likes to be approached by women and then strikes because they don't believe it? I suggested and she laughed.

Of course it can be, you're right about that, but I'll take the risk!, she confirmed and grinned all over her face.

Tell me young man, would you do me a favour?, she asked afterwards and I nodded in confirmation. Even if I had only seen her a few times, I couldn't have refused her anything. I liked her, I had already noticed that. With some people, I knew as soon as I saw them that I didn't have to have spoken to them to like them. She was the best example of that.

What can I do for you? I asked curiously.

Would you like to run with me? I don't want to be alone It could be that he's waiting for me somewhere and I don't want to experience that!

Of course no problem. But I don't think I can keep up with them! I wasn't sure, she shook her head.

We will manage. You are young, so you can make an effort. Besides, I don't believe them. They don't look like they're about to collapse! she was sure.

    Well, let's try it then!

For the first time I deviated from my usual path. She steered me down paths I didn't know and amazed me at how much I enjoyed walking the park's intricate route. Here it smelled more intensely of forest, grass and trees, the birds seemed to be singing louder. While my lungs soon began to rattle, she didn't mind. She walked silently beside me, sometimes smiling sideways at me. She didn't mind, she was well trained, probably for years. Enviable. If I were similarly fit at her age, I could congratulate myself.

Eventually we came to one of the exits of the park and she stopped.

I thank you, very kind of you to accompany me. I'm turning here, I'm done with my way for today! she announced and took two deep breaths.

No thank you, it was a great pleasure for me to be able to accompany you! The lady gave me the impression that she was used to it. Her appearance suggested that her life had been affluent. The little jewelry she wore looked expensive to me, not in a dated form, but in a modern style.

My part. What would you think if we ran together more often? Our times seem roughly the same. It's more fun with two than alone and I would also feel safer. I've felt insecure ever since. Maybe I'm paranoid, but you never know!

She was right about that, I could understand her motivation and didn't think it was a bad suggestion. You could encourage each other to do better, but at the same time I could imagine that she was an interesting woman. She certainly had life experience and maybe we would find common themes. If not, it was less boring than before.

    So I immediately agreed.

You're welcome, tomorrow, here at nine o'clock? I asked and she nodded.

A good time. I'm looking forward to it!, she was sure, said goodbye to me in a friendly way and left the park. I looked after her for a moment and then completed the loop. When I got home I was exhausted and had walked more than usual. But I hadn't noticed, had been distracted enough. A first big success for me, a circumstance that put our running together in a good light. So it was not surprising that I was looking forward to the next day and to meeting the lady.

I got up early, took a shower beforehand even though it didn't make sense, freshened up and had to laugh at myself when I understood my subconscious action.

What are you doing there? You go jogging and not on a date! I accused myself as I stood in front of the bathroom mirror and checked that everything was alright.

A wide grin greeted me and I immediately tried to suppress it.

Now listen boy, don't think a woman like her would find anything appealing about you, what are you imagining? I continued, and the grin in the mirror widened.

Crazy! I was sure, had to laugh and left the bathroom in a good mood and set off. I was sure that she appreciated punctuality. Her manner was resolute enough for that, had dominant elements in the background, like a businesswoman. I liked that kind of charisma of people, as long as I was alive, felt comfortable with them. I couldn't stand fickle, bucking people.

Two minutes before the agreed time, I arrived at our meeting point and to my surprise she was already there, stretching her tendons, more flexible than me. The many years of training made itself felt.

When she saw me, she smiled faintly and looked at me.

Good morning young man. Punctual, which is how I like it! she greeted me and I knew that I had scored plus points with her.

Always, I don't like waiting for people who can't control themselves! I replied and she nodded in agreement.

No, you're right about that. I wish more people would think like them. Unfortunately, old values are often no longer taken for granted in our society. Therefore, they are a surprising counterexample. Very enjoyable! she complimented me and I had to say I liked it. For me she was a kind of person of respect whose positive opinion of me outweighed that of many others.

Thank you! I said dutifully and without another word we started moving. The lady determined the way, steered me in the direction she wanted to walk like the day before. It quickly became clear to me that she had a similar disposition to mine. Their route was the same as the day before, not deviating from it. I didn't mind, liked that kind of monotony. It also had the advantage that I could observe them more discreetly from the side. It was more out of the corner of my eye, I tried not to make it too obvious. What struck me more than the day before was
