The Assistant 2 Code Blue - Kate Black

    Chapter 1

    Richmond

Will sat on the edge of his desk with his arms crossed. His hair was messy and his face hadn’t been shaven in days. His always crisp white shirt was wrinkled and untucked. He looked up at me with eyes full of sadness. My heart pounded in my chest as I walked towards him.

I thought I lost you Gemma, he whispered.

I’m here, I said swallowing hard.

He rubbed my cheek with the back of his hand gently. Tears flowed down his face.

I am so sorry Gemma, he said.

I didn’t speak back. I just grabbed his hand that touched my cheek and kissed it. Will pulled me into him and placed his lips on mine gently. Things were different. He seemed affected and open. It was a tender soothing side I didn’t see much of. Seeing him like this was tearing me up inside. I hungered for him more now after I thought I lost him. I kissed him back taking control. I tore his shirt open as I pushed him back onto his desk. He cracked a little smile as I ran my fingers down his chest to his waist. I undid his belt and quickly pulled down his pants unleashing his erection. I kissed him down his torso and wet him with my mouth. He moaned my name. I was luckily wearing a skirt and pulled my panties off and jumped onto the desk. I raised my skirt and straddled him. We didn’t make love. We fucked. I punished him for everything through this.

The bus jostled me awake hitting my head on the window. I rubbed my temples relieving the pain. I was dreaming of him already. I quickly was reminded where I was. The exhaust smell filled the bus, turning my stomach over. I wiped my eyes and watched the trees disappear into streets and buildings.  I could feel the bus slowing down. Thank God. I swear I will never drink again. I could see good old Richmond. It was full of traffic and people. I was thankful to finally be able to see Maxine to catch up and leave the drama behind me. I did feel bad for leaving Nate but I knew I would see my brother again. I just needed time. I had enough money in my purse and my account to be ok for a month or so. I checked into a hotel nearby. I called Maxine and told her I was in town. She always invited me to stay as I long as I needed to.  I told her I needed one night to myself and I would be at her duplex tomorrow after check out. We were only streets away from each other and I could walk to see her first thing in the morning.

I found a fancy hotel without thinking it would cost a pretty penny. I guess I was just used to what Will always booked. I walked through the gold plated lobby with a fountain and headed for the front desk.

Good Evening Ma'am, how long will you be staying with us? said a way too happy red headed guy with a badge that said William. I tried not to roll my eyes.

Just one night, I said handing him my card, keeping my eyes down at the counter.

Alright, Ms. Carter you will be in room 425. If there is anything you need, please don't hesitate to call us at the front desk, he said with a huge toothy grin, handing me my room key. I smiled and grabbed the key off the desk and headed to the elevators. The elevators opened up and a young blonde woman about my age came out barreling past me. She was dressed in designer clothes and red lipstick. I laughed to myself and pressed the number four button and let my back fall against the mirrored wall. Will invaded my thoughts again.

You shouldn't wear such dark lipstick. Men will be scared to kiss you, I remembered. I swear I could smell him. The bell of the elevator dinged awakening me from my daydreams. I told myself to get over it. He left me for Julie. The one person I can't stand. I could handle his mood swings but I don't know if I could forgive him for that.

I threw my purse down and headed to the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror in disgust. I barely recognized myself. My hair was greasy and I had old makeup coated bags under my eyes. I peeled my booze, sweat, and guilt infested clothes off.  I grabbed a robe and called room service to wash my clothes for me while I took a shower. I leaned my head against the wall as the hot water massaged over my shoulders. Tears released from my eyes. I tried scrubbing the last few months of my life off me. I was thankful Paul and I hadn't had sex but I shouldn't have gone home with him. I should have never played Will's game. I got out and wrapped in a fluffy white towel. My skin was tight from the cheap brand of soap. I found some complimentary lotion and applied it over my dry legs and arms. I flipped on the tv for distraction and ordered some food.

An hour later my clean clothes arrived along with room service I ordered. My stomach growled at the sight of food. I hadn’t eaten since yesterday before I got drunk at Mackey’s. My appetite was finally starting to grow and I shoveled food into my mouth. I kept a piece of fruit and yogurt in the mini fridge for tomorrow mornings breakfast so I wouldn’t linger here any longer. I flopped on the bed and quickly recognized the same smell as most hotels do and made me slightly nauseous.

I must have eaten my food too fast or I was still sick from last night’s drinking binge. I ran to the bathroom and threw up everything I just devoured.  I was feeling miserable and ordered some pepto bismol from the front desk. Sitting on the edge of the bed between tears and pain there was a knock at my door. An older gentleman wearing a suit handed me the medicine. I tipped him and sent him on his way.

I fell asleep between bouts of running back and forth to the bathroom
