    7 HIGHWAYS OF THE SOUL

In Transit: There are times in our lives when we find ourselves in a life-changing situation. These situations can interrupt our comfort and daily routines. At this point, we are put into exile status and are In Transit. The decisions we make at this juncture will impact the next chapter of our lives. Connecting to a healthy environment will prevent us from breathing in the toxic fumes of the highways. Things may seem dark, but faith in Hashem and introspection assists us in choosing The Right Track.

The Right Track: The road we travel is one of the most important decisions we can make. When we know we are in the right place, we become more confident of a secure setting that will lead us to our goals. Still there are times when a person chooses the wrong track and crosses a different bridge. He should never lose hope since Hashem is always accepting one’s return to Him. All he needs to do is make a U-Turn into his arms. Learning and connecting to Hashem through prayer and following His direction will assist us when we Turn the Corner.

Turning the Corner: While on The Right Track, there will be a fork in the road. Which way we turn will affect our outcome. With a newly developed confidence in ourselves and faith in Hashem’s guidance, we can trust our internal compass to choose the correct highway for us. If we choose the wrong road, we can always make a U-Turn. When we make the correct turn, it’s then time to Stay the Course.

Stay the Course: It can be rough terrain on this highway. Potholes and confusing byways can test our faith in Hashem and ourselves. It can be a long boring road and we might fall asleep at the wheel. Awareness and patience are some of the most important factors on this road. It’s a continued investment in ourselves to ensure we are Following the Signs.

Following the Signs: It is important to pay attention to the roadmap signs sent to us by Hashem. It is His way of communicating to us and telling us that we are on our way to our destination. All we must do is pay the toll and Cross the Bridge.

Crossing the Bridge: Once we make this decision, we rarely turn back. It’s time to leave the past behind and move forward. We are now in a new place in our lives. It’s a new world for us and we should be thankful to Hashem that we are very close to being Home once again.

Home Sweet Home: After a long trip from what may feel like an extended exile, we are finally back Home and life becomes a do over. Our routines are set. Once home, our renewed and strengthened faith in Hashem and His commandments will serve as a legacy to our future generations. Our nation has been in exile for close to 2,000 years. Thankfully, our ancestors chose The Right Track, Turned the Corners correctly, Stayed the Course and Followed the Signs on how to live our lives. All we must do is pray to Hashem to redeem us and send the Messiah to Cross the Bridge into Jerusalem, our Home Sweet Home.

    INTRODUCTION

    ONE MAN/ONE HEART

In the Hebrew year 2448 (1312 BCE), our nation stood at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah. At Sinai, we were 3 million people as One Man/One Heart. Three thousand years later, our Syrian Community is living the same way. Our community has been blessed due to our love for one another. When one person is in pain, we are all in pain. When we celebrate, we celebrate together. The Synagogues, Yeshivas, and institutions are foundations for the next generation.

With G-d’s blessing, I was fortunate enough to be born into this community with rich traditions. Our fathers and grandfathers sacrificed their lives to make sure we had stability. In 1933, Rabbi Jacob S. Kassin arrived from Israel to lead our community. He led us for 60 years. He established the fabric that made our community unique and special. Our respect for our leaders and Rabbis unifies our community to this day and hopefully forever.

I was born on April 7, 1965. I was blessed with parents that sacrificed their lives for me and my three younger sisters. My mother was always there and often opened her home to celebrate holidays with our family and extended families. Spending time with family kept us close and unified.

I got married at the age of 20 and I had my first three children between the ages of 21- 28. My dad and I were in the retail business and were very successful. Our religious traditions were always part of my soul. I prayed every day and was always connected to Hashem (the Almighty), in my own way. However, when I was 28 years old, the business model changed, and business declined. We lost our leases. It was a very difficult time for me both financially and emotionally. Overnight, I went from an employer to an employee, and it was challenging to climb back up the ladder of success. For the first time in my life, my confidence was compromised.

At the age of 34, I had to start over again and adjust to some major life transitions. The loss of my business ultimately led to challenges in all areas in my life. My marriage was dissolved, and I had to move on. At this time, I found myself In Transit (the
