About this ebook

-Kingston-

I'm content with my life - living in my family home, working our late parents' ranch, and watching on as Kevyn and Lauren plan their wedding, and plan for the arrival of their baby. Life is good, until I meet Lauren's doctor. The moment Olivia walks into the exam room, life goes from good, to great. Suddenly, I'm not so content. I find myself wanting what Kevyn and Lauren have, and I want it with Olivia. With the threat of her ex-boyfriend looming over us, I have a fierce feeling of protectiveness I've never experienced before.

Ranch Desire is the second novella in the series, and should be read in order. This book contains hot and steamy bedroom fun and is only recommended for adults over the age of 18.

Warning: This book contains some violence, and may contain triggers for some readers.

    Ranch Desire - Emmalee Quinn

    Chapter 1

    Kingston

    ––––––––

Are you sure you don't mind coming with me? Lauren asks, as we walk out to my truck.

    I don't mind going alone.

Lauren has an ultrasound appointment this afternoon. Kevyn was supposed to go with her, but was called away shortly after lunch, local law enforcement needing his help with abused horses on a farm in the next town over. He explained the situation, and had asked me to go with her instead.

I smile at my soon-to-be sister-in-law. I'm happy to come along. You know I'd do anything for you and my nephew.

Ha! How do you know it's a boy?  We decided not to find out the sex of the baby. She asks.

An uncle just knows. I tell her with a grin.

All right, all-knowing Uncle King. Let's go, or we'll be late. She teases.

We pull into the parking lot of her doctor's office and make our way inside.

She checks in with reception and leaves to pee in a cup.  Apparently, she has to do that at every visit.

She returns a few minutes later, taking a seat next to me in the waiting room.  I'm reading a week-by-week pregnancy guide, my eyebrows furrowed in concentration.

    She chuckles. Learning anything?

Did you know my nephew is the size of a cantaloupe? I ask, turning to her.

Yes, I did. She tells me, chuckling.

I continue to read the guide, and turn back to her a moment later.

How are your hemorrhoids? I ask loudly, catching the attention of everyone else in the waiting room.

She slaps me in the arm. I don't have hemorrhoids! She whisper yells, making me laugh.

She glances around the waiting room, flushing with embarrassment.

I'm sorry. She mouths to the other couples, twirling her finger around her temple, insinuating, I'm not right in the head.

I chuckle, noticing my antics have earned me a few humorous grins from the other males in the room.

Lauren Thomas? A nurse calls out from an open door.

We both stand and Lauren turns to me.

You're coming back with me? She asks, shocked I'd even want to.

    Of course. I tell her.

On one condition. She says, eyeing me.

You're not allowed to embarrass me. She tells me.

    I grin. No promises.

I've grown quite close with Lauren over the last seven months or so.  I had liked her from the moment we met, and decided to pursue her if Kevyn hadn't.  As soon as I knew Kevyn had feelings for her, I backed off.  He did see her first, after all.  Lauren is great, and I'm genuinely happy for Lauren and my brother. Her sister, Kat, is also a joy to have around the ranch. Having them at the ranch makes our family feel whole again. I'm excited at the thought of having a baby join our family.

We follow the nurse down a narrow hallway and stop at a scale, where Lauren's weight is taken.  She narrowed her eyes at me when the nurse mentioned how much weight she had gained since her last appointment. I laughed and held up my hands in surrender, knowing better than to tease a woman about her weight.  I don't have a death wish, after all.

We are led to an exam room, and I wait outside the door, while Lauren changes into an ugly, blue gown.  I step inside, once she's given me the all clear.

I walk around the room while we wait for the doctor, and take in our surroundings.

I wander over to a counter where there is a 3-D model of a woman's stomach, and a little baby is inside.  I go to grab it, when Lauren stops me.

Wait! Don't touch that! She warns me.

    Why not? I ask.

Ignoring her warning, I grab it.

The damn thing falls to pieces all over the counter and floor.

    That's why. She says, laughing.

I hear the door open and scramble to pick up all of the pieces.

Hi Lauren. How are you today? I hear the doctor ask Lauren.

I'm great, Dr. Jensen.  The baby over there, though, is having another bad day. Lauren laughs.

Oh, Kevyn couldn't make it today? The doctor asks, laughter in her voice.

No, not today.  My soon-to-be brother-in-law came with me today. Dr. Jensen, this is Kingston. King this is Dr. Jensen. Lauren says.

I give up on trying to put the damn model back together and turn to meet the doctor.

I stop dead in my tracks, as my eyes take in the beautiful doctor. She has shoulder-length, straight, blonde hair, and big, chocolate-brown eyes. She isn't tall, maybe five foot two, slender, with nice breasts.  I would guess she is about a small c-cup. I can't take my eyes off of hers, though.  They are a deep, brown, that sparkle in the bright light of the exam room.

Once I'm able to pick my jaw up off of the floor, I offer my hand.

King. I tell her, shaking her hand.

I'm sorry about that. I tell her, gesturing towards the model I gave up on.

She laughs. It's okay.  In fact, Kevyn did the same thing his first time in here.

I turn to Lauren and find her shaking her head, grinning at me.

Okay, Lauren. Here's a sheet to cover your bottom half. Pull up your gown and I'll take measurements.

I watch as the doctor takes a small tape measure over Lauren's expanding belly, notating her chart as she goes.

Great. Measurements are good.  King, you'll want to step out of the room for the next part. The doctor says to me.

I look to Lauren. Are you sure you're okay with me stepping out.

Lauren laughs. She's going to do an internal exam, King. You really want to stay for that?

I pale, shaking my head, then leave the room.

A few minutes later, the doctor leaves the room. She shuts the door behind her, and turns to me.

Lauren is getting dressed. She said she'll meet you out here in the hall. She tells me, a blush on her cheeks. I wonder what that's all about.

Thanks, Doc. I tell her before she walks away.

I watch her walk down the hall, and disappear into another exam room.

The door across from me opens, and Lauren steps out, grinning at me.

How did it go? I ask her.

Doctor Jensen said everything looks good. She replies.

That's great. Are you ready, then? I ask.

She nods and I lead her out to my truck.

    ***

I walk Lauren inside the house and into the kitchen, where we find Charlie making dinner.

Is Kevyn back yet? I ask Charlie.

Yes, he's out in the barn. She answers.

How was your appointment, Love. Charlie asks Lauren.

Great. The doctor says everything looks good. Lauren tells her.

You might want to start preparing Lauren some fiber-rich foods, though. I say, turning to go find Kevyn.

We need to stay on top of those hemorrhoids! I yell, leaving the room.

I don't have hemorrhoids, King! I hear Lauren yell after me.

I laugh, heartily, as I make my way out to the barn.

I find Kevyn out in the barn. He is helping Kat muck out the stalls, while Ky has the horses outside, letting them exercise.

Hey. How did Lauren's appointment go? Kevyn asks me.

It went fine. The Doc said everything looks good. I answer.

He relaxes. Thanks for going with her. He tells me.

Anytime, brother.  How did it go with the horses on the other farm? I ask.

He sighs. Not good.  There were five horses in total, all are severely malnourished.

Are we taking them in? I ask him.

"I was waiting for you before I committed to anything.
