Jason Whittaker had become tired of teaching in the rough, chaotic schools around his local area. He’d tried very hard to gain his teaching qualifications and passed all his exams with flying colours so, understandably, he had looked forward to being a high school teacher and having a steady, safe job for life.

But from day one of being a teacher, he had been amazed at the terrible state of local education where attendance was either low or classrooms were packed beyond breaking point and lessons would usually descend into chaos. At first, he felt obliged to try to rectify the situation but found he was up against impossible odds and gradually came to the conclusion that state school teaching was no longer an option for him.

But his essential love of teaching hadn’t been lost and so he began setting his sights higher, looking for jobs in the more upmarket newspapers. He didn’t feel he had the experience or the acumen to teach at the more prestigious private schools, but figured that maybe someone would be impressed enough with his academic credentials to give him a chance.

When he had seen an application offer for a teaching job at the renowned St. Bridget’s All Girls Boarding School, his eyes had lit up. The school had a fabulous reputation as one of the most progressive and high achieving schools in the county and only the crème de la crème got to teach there, with a similarly high standard for students. It was a very ambitious leap from teaching in state schools but with his middle class background and clean cut appearance, he felt he was in with a shot.
