Devotions from the Nursery - Sasha Gardiner
There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe
There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do.
She gave them some broth without any bread;
She whipped them all soundly and sent them to bed.
The mother in this poem had so many children that she became overwhelmed. I can just imagine her being stressed and tired, and it seems she had no one to help her manage her many responsibilities. Unfortunately, it appears she might even have been in financial straits because she fed her children broth—which is basically liquid without meat or vegetables—without even any bread. It’s apparent that her stress levels were also skyrocketing because she scolded her hungry children before putting them to bed. Only a mother in dire straits would scold a hungry child. Their hunger might have even escalated her feelings of frustration and inadequacy.
Does this situation feel familiar to you? Have you been struggling with your children or some other situation, and it feels like there is no help in sight? This is when we need to go to God. God will supply all our needs. We are reminded to bring all our troubles to God. When we turn to God, we can rest assured that God cares and will provide.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. —Philippians 4:6
Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? —Luke 12:24
Little Miss Muffet
Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet,
Eating her curds and whey;
Along came a spider, who sat down beside her,
And frightened Miss Muffet away.
Miss Muffet was minding her own business when she was approached and frightened so badly that she left her seat and ran away, leaving her food behind. Miss Muffet’s food represents us focusing on Jesus by reading the Bible and meditating on Scripture. Her tuffet represents the foundation we have in God. The spider coming along represents the people or events in life that can provoke us to abandon God.
Many times, in life we are walking with God and focused on becoming better versions of ourselves. Then out
