Once upon a time, there was a man named Jack Dogherty, who lived with his wife, Biddy, in a wild, remote area, on the coast of County Clare, in Ireland. To look at the place where they lived, it was nothing much but rocks and seals and seagulls, and most people who knew them, wondered why they lived there all alone, as had generations of Jack's family. But they had very good reasons; it was good land, and there was plenty of fish, of course, all to themselves, as Jack was a fisherman, like his father and grandfather before him.
Biddy, his wife, was happy living there too, and proud of her husband, because, despite living like a hermit where he did, Jack was a good-natured, jolly man, and they lived well. He was a good provider,
