Secret Crush - Heather Scarlett
CHAPTER ONE
Jess Landon swirled the ice in her highball glass, sending a pensive glance around the trendy bar. Since when did her quiet New York suburb hometown follow trends? The bar was dark, cozy, sophisticated. Nothing like the rustic, country charm Bonner, NY was known for.
She may as well be in her New York City neighborhood bar, where at least she’d be drinking with friends. Not alone, like a sad single girl 4 days before Christmas. She was supposed to be here with her new boyfriend, who she was bringing home for the first holiday. A year into the relationship, it seemed right. Barry felt dumping her 5 days before Christmas to jet off to the Caribbean with his platonic female best friend
was more right.
Which left Jess alone at Christmas, with her family, who were determined to fix everything that they thought was wrong with her life. Jess mentally ticked them off to herself: living in the city, being single, working in fashion, and not finance like her parents. She dropped her head onto the cold marble bar, wishing herself back in New York City. In her familiar surroundings, with friends.
Picking her head up, she glanced into the mirror over the bar. Movement in the bar’s entrance caught her attention. A tall man stood framed in the bright light from the street beyond. He was dressed in worn jeans, a heavy flannel shirt, and boots. He looked like the quintessential Bonner resident. Burly and capable as if he had just come from chopping wood or building something sturdy. Which meant that he stood out in this trendy bar. He looked around, confusion plain on his face. He did not expect this cosmopolitan ambiance any more than she had. She felt an immediate kinship with this stranger. He
