Lawd, have mercy, Mary said.

Thom Seymour raised his eyes from his desk to the middle-aged African-American woman who came in the late afternoons to clean his office. She was looking over Thom to the large window just behind him. He looked at her disdainfully, but she paid him no mind. He turned and looked outside. Rain plunged from the sky, coupled with a brazen sunshine normally found on June mornings.  Here, it was late October.

    Mary moaned sorrowfully, They say when it rain like that The Devil beatin’ his wife.

    Thom frowned. These people really got on his nerves.

Even before Thom saw Goodman fuck his wife, she with her head thrown back, her mouth open in ecstasy, even before the bewitching evening of Thom’s drunkenness that led to his infidelity and eventual descent
