Chapter 9

Krill

Rafael’s army reached the port city of Krill. Without Krill, it would be impossible for Queen Angela to keep her armies well supplied with food and weapons—at least without intervention from the gods.

After a brief stand off, the city guard laid down their arms. It was a town of merchants that had little loyalty to the auspices of the Queen.

To Silvia’s annoyance, Rafael had refused to take the mayor’s own chambers while they stayed in the city. Rafael explained that he wanted to generate as much good will as possible so that they would be able to avoid having to use force to cut off the food and weapons shipments that flowed from the port to the cities of Malnor.

All Silvia knew was that she would’ve liked to have been back in a palace as she was accustomed to.

As she looked around the decedent bed chambers that the mayor’s manor held for honored guests, she reflected that this really was adequate compared to what she had grown used to. Silk sheets adorned a feather mattress, and plush armchairs with fine furniture complimented the room.

She and Rafael had both already washed off the dirt of the day when they first arrived, but he hadn’t had time for anything else before he left to meet with the Mayor.

She rang the bell to summon a servant, and she instructed the timid boy to bring her a plate of their finest food, and some flowers.

She soaked her feet in a warm wash basin as she waited, soothing her feet which were worn out from the long hours of marching. Her body was becoming accustomed to the daily miles, though, and her back and feet ached much less than they had from the first few days of relentless hiking.

After the servant returned, she lay on the bed plopping grapes and cheese into her mouth while she twisted stems together and formed a wreath topped with blue and yellow flowers. She admired it against the purple of her silk dress, then placed it on her head.

Now, she really did feel like a princess again.

Every night, she and Rafael had made passionate love, and gazed into each other’s eyes as their bodies melted together and they talked for hours until they fell asleep. It was wonderful, but Silvia found herself missing the way he had roughly dominated her before. Now she was yearning for him to control her, and make her submit to him again.

At the sound of the door creaking, Silvia looked up.

Good news, said Rafael as he strode in. We’re going to be able to set up a supply line from here to the capital. As new shipments come into the port we’ll get what we need to the front line.

I don’t care, said Silvia in her best haughty princess voice.

Rafael slowly turned to look at her, taking in the wreath of flowers atop her head as she stretched out on the bed.

She bit into a strawberry as she gazed back at him.
