Chapter 14

Confessions

Sophie spent most of the day working at the waterfront, learning the skills she would need in the coming weeks, and as a result didn’t get to see much of Will. She learned how to capsize sailboats in the water, and then right them again—along with learning how to kayak, canoe, row, and paddleboard.

It kept her hands occupied, but invariably her mind kept drifting to Will, and she worried about the future. She realized that she wasn’t certain what their relationship meant to him. He talked about wanting deeper meaning and satisfaction that would sustain them through life, but was he actually planning on keeping things going after the summer?

He might mean everything he was saying now, but later on he might decide that they couldn’t make a relationship work once they weren’t kept together by their job anymore. She needed to actually talk to him about all of these worries, but it was hard to bring herself to speak any of it into existence when she was face to face with him. Everything felt so perfect when she was by his side, and she was terrified that if she spoke then she would discover that all he wanted was a summer fling.

She finally decided that she would wait. She reasoned that even though they had moved incredibly quickly, physically, they still needed to let their emotions catch up and sort themselves out. It
