Tears welled from her eyes and she stood up. So I’m leaving.

He sat stunned as she turned and walked out.

Sylvia knocked on the door and waited, her stomach churning. After several seconds, she knocked again. What if he wasn't home?

She saw a shadowy shape through the frosted glass of the door, then the door opened. As soon as she saw Slade's familiar face, the tears she'd been holding back began to flow. She stepped into his arms and he held her close. The door closed behind her as she rested her head against his solid chest, allowing the comfort of his arms to sooth her.

He held her for a few moments, then gently guided her into the living room and settled her on the couch beside him.

I'd ask if everything is okay, but clearly it's not, he said.

She shook her head. I left Mr. Grant.

He handed her a box of tissues and she wiped her eyes, then gazed at him.

I don't want to cause problems between you and Mr. Grant, she said, but… I didn't know where else to go. I didn't want to go to Mr. King. That wouldn't be fair to him.

I told you to come to me and I'm glad you did. Don't worry about Mr. Grant.
