Preface to The Latest Edition
I’m writing this new preface exactly 7 years after I published the first edition of this book. Seven years. That’s a long time and so much has happened. So when I decided to put out a hardcover edition of Win Your Inner Battles, I wanted to make sure the content of the book is still relevant.
Do I still think the advice is helpful? Are there any things I wrote back then but changed my mind on? Is there anything I would change?
Well, I was surprised that everything still holds up great. In fact, I’ve seen the long-term effects of the Win Your Inner Battles way of life, and it’s been amazing. You know, I’m not a person who can lie. I’ve never believed in the whole fake it till you make it
idea. That’s just not in my DNA. I always looked at myself as an honest and straightforward person. When I wrote this book, I remained honest. I believed in the content so much that I wrote with conviction.
And the biggest lesson I learned at that time was that before you do anything in life, you must fix your own inner struggles. I still believe that’s true. Forget about every piece of life and business advice people give you. If you’re not mentally fit, you won’t be able to live a good life. Sure, maybe you’ll succeed at achieving your goals. Maybe you’ll run a marathon, get a promotion, or make money in the stock market.
But none of that will give you any satisfaction if your mind is not right. I’ve seen so many people who get depressed, and nearly all of them are kind, talented, and good. They don’t deserve to be sad or depressed. They don’t deserve to feel like they are constantly living in what I call a funeral mood.
This happens when your mind is not right.
Look at your own life. Do you feel bad about yourself regularly? That’s not normal. A normal person gets tired or might feel down for a day or two but quickly gets back after a good night’s sleep. That might happen a few times a year. But if you’re up and down every few weeks like a yo-yo, it’s time to make a change. It’s time to become consistently content with your life.
You really don’t need to be happy all the time. Life’s too hard for that. You just want to have a mind that’s strong enough to stay positive through it all. Here’s what I was thinking on my run yesterday.
Life is really hard. It is. Anyone who doesn’t admit that is either delusional or grew up as royalty. We don’t fall into those groups. We must take on life.
And here’s what I was thinking about: To live a happy and satisfying life, you just have to be one tiny bit tougher than life. When life is trying to get you down with all the problems that are going on—from work, politics, relationships, healthy, and so forth—you must endure just one step more.
Life keeps hitting you with challenge after challenge. And instead of staying focused and mentally strong, we surrender mentally. We give up. We don’t feel like going on. We say nothing makes sense. Why do anything? Why even wake up in the morning?
Because there is no alternative. When we win our inner battles, we can take that energy to take life on. This is the journey I went on too. And it takes time. Even as I was writing this book I wasn’t as mentally strong as today. But I had enough mental strength to start the journey. That’s all you need. I hope that after reading this book, you will also have enough to get going. From then, it will only be a matter of time before you become so mentally strong you can take on anything life throws at you.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you enjoy this journey.
And a special thanks for buying this premium hardcover edition. I’ve written a special bonus chapter you can find at the end of Part I of this book. I placed it there so the freeloaders can’t read it on Amazon’s preview function. This is only for the real supporters.
Take care!
-Darius
Introduction
A lot can happen in a year. In August 2015, I first published this as Massive Life Success. A title I didn’t like as soon the book was published.
It was my first time writing seriously and I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t even intend to write a book. When I started writing, I saw my life changing. And somehow, I felt like I should document how I overcame my inner battles with fear (I chose the new title because this book shows you how I won the battle inside my own head). For the first time in my life, I finally knew what I was doing. I had just quit my job at an IT research firm in London. A job that I took after feeling like I failed as an entrepreneur.
That feeling was completely unjust. In fact, I did well as an entrepreneur. After getting my master’s degree in marketing by the end of 2010, I started a business with my dad. We grew the company fast. And after two years of doing that, I started a few businesses of my own. I got into consulting, building websites, and I even started a men’s apparel brand (which failed miserably).
But because I didn’t see the results I wanted to see, I thought I wasn’t good at business. That was purely because of my inner battles. Somewhere along the line, I became my own worst enemy. You become too hard on yourself. You criticize yourself. And nothing is enough. You hate uncertainty. But here I was, just having quit my job, and I was committed to pick up right where I left my business.
I’d finally conquered the enemy within and I stopped chasing things I didn’t want. I had clarity. And in this book, I will take you on the same journey I took to win my inner battles.
When I talk about the enemy within, I talk about fear and a lack of confidence. I believe those are the two biggest challenges that stand in the way of living life on your own terms. And for the past two years, I’ve been truly living life on my own terms. I can tell you this: it’s liberating. But it’s not easy.
A lot has happened since I first published this book. Until now, almost three million people have read my articles, eighteen thousand people joined my newsletter, and more than five thousand people took my online course Procrastinate Zero. I also changed my mind about a lot of
