Chapter 1
I TAPPED MY PENCIL against the fabric case. The professor had kicked a girl out of the class the previous week when she dared to tap her pen on the desk. Still, the rhythmic beat helped me to think about the presentation.
Mythical Creatures Philosophy wasn’t exactly a subject I needed to take, but the idea of creatures that might have once existed–maybe still exist somewhere remote–fascinated me.
My gaze wandered around the room. A lot of people had taken the course, but now, three weeks in, the numbers had dwindled as the withdrawal date passed. I suspected a few were only here to grab an easy grade. I skipped my gaze back a couple of rows and had to turn my head to see Marc.
Marc stared straight ahead at the professor; he used to do the same back in high school as well. I had believed he had been super focused, but he’d never made the top of the class lists. As I stared at him, he looked my way. Our eyes met for a moment and I felt the instant connection I always did. Still, I diverted my attention back to the front of the room. The professor had his back turned to the class as he talked about the theory behind dragons, perhaps an extinct lizard species.
I watched as the screen changed to show a map, segmented by colours over certain countries. Smaller images appeared, showing the different dragons that appeared in mythology and linked them to the source areas. I had been given a book once for a birthday about dragon species. The illustrations had fascinated me.
Perhaps that’s why the professor hadn’t held my attention, and I dared to sneak another glance over my shoulder at Marc. His attention seemed fully on the presentation. I should have pulled out of the class the moment I saw him there on day one. I had spent the better part of high school hoping to catch his eye, hoping that he felt that same connection I did whenever we were close.
There wasn’t anything in particular about Marc that set him apart from the other guys in the room. His black hair fell loose around his face and sometimes, when the light was right, it looked like he had silver streaks through it. He had been the only guy I had dressed up for last year for the end-of-year social and after all my effort he hadn’t even attended. I had tried not to take it personally. From what I’ve seen, he’d never shown an interest in going out with any particular girl. As I watched him from where I sat, I couldn’t help but feel drawn to him again. As if something deep inside of me wanted to know him as well as I knew myself.
Before the thought had left my mind, it happened again. His head turned towards me and there was no glancing away. I mustered up a half smile and thought I saw the corner of his own mouth turn, but perhaps it was just a trick of the light.
I turned back to the professor and listened until the end of the session. As soon as he dismissed the class, chairs scraped on the floor and the mass of the people that remained headed for the two
