Blood in the Snow

Blistering cold wind brushed up the top layer of snow, spitting its icy breath up and making my vision hazy. I looked up at mom as she turned to smile down at me. Her pale face glistened with frost beneath her hood, making her eyelashes look like swan feathers. At that steep of an incline, she towered over me like the frost giants back home. And then, then something huge and dark overtook the cliff side, I reached out to her. I tried to tell her. Tried to get her attention. But… Jarred from the memory, tears streamed down the young boy’s cheeks as he choked on hiccupped cries.

I know, child. It-It’s quite alright now. I leaned down, unsure where to put my arms around him as I hugged him. His shoulder-length ginger tousles falling over my leather-clad shoulder. He gripped me tightly as his crying became more violent. Shhhh, hush now. It’s going to be-
