In 1859, George F. Gilman and George Huntington Hartford founded a mail-order tea business called The Great American Tea Company.
It operated from a storefront and warehouse on 31 Vesey Street in New York City, and it began to establish retail stores in the 1860’s. Then, in 1870, The Great American Tea Company
was re-named to Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company,
or A&P for short.
