    INTRODUCTION

"Now fear the Lord, and serve Him with sincerity and faithfulness. Put away the gods your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord. If it is displeasing to you to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve, if it should be the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites’ land where you are now living. Yet as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." -Joshua 24:14-15

Joshua’s time as Israel’s leader was drawing toward its sunset. This man had never been like other people. When his mentor, Moses, spoke with God, Joshua always remained as close as possible. God came down and spoke to Moses face to face. That’s incredible! It is possible, however, that Joshua’s hunger for God rivaled that of Moses himself. When Moses left the tent of meeting after talking to God, Joshua stayed there (Exodus 33). He refused to leave God’s presence!

When Moses died and Israel needed a new leader, Joshua was the natural choice. The Bible does not offer a lengthy defense of his qualifications. Rather, it simply says that Joshua, "was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. And the children of Israel listened to him and did as the Lord commanded Moses" (Deuteronomy 34:9).  Everyone knew that God was with Joshua because he had demonstrated an unshakable love for God and had faithfully served Moses.

Having led God’s people to victory after victory, Joshua had now mostly fulfilled his purpose. His reflections turned both to Israel
