THE DEAL
I was a ward of the State of Connecticut. Social workers tried to persuade Ella
to give me to the State as a ward in 1970. They thought I was severely retarded. They thought Ella was an ignorant Black. My mother refused. But she thought of The Deal. Success is a series of deals and actions after the deals succeed or fail. My mother planted my path in the hot summer of 1970. She offered to give me to the White man
as a ward on the condition that the State pays for my college. The State agreed because it believed it would be excused from the college condition as I was retarded. Shrewd, Ella knew her boy was smart. The State paid for my college. I can write this book due to my mother's deal-making power and my ability to use effort to flower Ella's gift of fortune bestowed on me.
