Leadership is not a hierarchical level. It is not a title or a rank. It is not a position of power or a place of privilege. It is about going places and guiding others.

In a global study involving over 35,000 people, we asked them to think about the individuals in their lives who were their role models for leadership. They overwhelmingly nominated a family member more often than anyone else.

The people you choose to be your role models are individuals with whom you have the most frequent contact. They are not celebrities, public figures, or social media influencers. They are the ones with whom people have had the most personal contact.

The most important finding of all is that leadership is a relationship between those who aspire to lead and those who choose to follow. If you want to be a leader whose guidance others want to follow willingly, there must be a human connection.

The leader-constituent relationship is about understanding and responding to the expectations of others. People must pass several essential character tests before they earn the designation of leader from other people.

The first law of leadership is that if people don’t believe in the messenger, they won’t believe the message. People must be able to trust that the leaders’ words can be trusted, that they will do what they say, and that they are personally excited and enthusiastic about the group’s direction.
