    Terwijl Mimi haar radioapparatuur controleerde kwam er een gestalte tevoorschijn uit de duisternis. De breedgeschouderde en gespierde man was rond de vijfendertig jaar oud. Met zijn parmantige neus en keurig verzorgde snor zag hij er aantrekkelijk uit.

    “De uilen zijn luidruchtig vannacht,” zei de man met een diepe baritonstem.

    “Je mag veel lawaai maken als je de wijste van alle vogels bent,” antwoordde ik.

    Nadat we onze codewoorden hadden uitgewisseld stapte de man naar voren en gaf hij me een hand. Het handen schudden deed hij op zo’n krachtige wijze dat hij mijn arm bijna uit mijn schouder trok.

    “Ik ben Jean-Claude,” zei hij met een glimlach. “Jean-Claude Quiniou. Ik zal jullie naar het onderduikadres brengen en jullie voorstellen aan de familie Le Roux.”

    “Ik ben Genevieve,” zei ik, “en dit is Lise.” Vanzelfsprekend gebruikte ik onze schuilnamen, want Eve en Mimi hoorden thuis in een ander leven.
