    1. Aerospace and Defence (A&D) Industry

    With variety of flying machines roaring over the Bangalore skies entertaining people, AERO INDIA 2021 hosted in Bangalore sometime back has created lot of interest in the exciting industry Aerospace and Defence (A&D). These two sectors have lot of common things like technology, importance, size of market etc, Industry analysts often study the developments, issues, trends of these two sectors in parallel. In the Aero show Companies exhibited variety of products, services showcasing advanced technologies raising curiosity in public and excitement in technocrats.

    The manufacturing infrastructure required for Aircraft is very huge, the manufacturers operate in both Aerospace & Defence to make the investment in infrastructure economically viable. Boeing is the world's largest manufacturer’s facility at Everett, near Seattle in Washington State, USA is spread across 100 acres with huge hangers that can accommodate assembly of a Jumbo jet, a runway, huge fuel storage tanks etc.

    Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners, defence, space and security systems, and service provider of after market support.

    During my recent visit to Seattle, my Son-in-law took me to see Boeing's production facility in Everett, where I was amazed to see the large assembly hangers and was comparing with the hangers of BEL, where I had worked for many years. The largest assembly hanger has a door of 81 x 350 feet size. One can imagine the cost of maintaining such huge facility.

    Global A&D industry revenue is expected to begin to recuperate in 2021 after a difficult year in 2020. But this recovery will be likely uneven across the two key sectors, commercial aerospace and defence.

    Commercial Aerospace.

    The commercial aerospace sector has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a dramatic reduction in passenger traffic, in turn affecting demand for aircrafts. The commercial aerospace sector is expected to recover slowly, as travel demand is expected to return to pre–COVID-19 levels by 2024. The pandemic has resulted in certain behavioural changes among passengers, with an increased focus on short-haul and domestic travel.
