AUTHOR’S NOTE
1. ANOTHER WAY TO PAY
How you pay matters.
It’s a delightful sunny day at a theme park. The enticing scents of buttered popcorn and sweet confections linger in the air. Laughter and cries of delight echo in the distance. You excitedly soak it all in, but you’re not alone. In an instant, you feel your child’s tight embrace and look down at a pair of sparkling eyes and the biggest smile you’ve ever seen. You smile too, not just because your child is happy, but because this trip was essentially free.
A few feet away stands someone else. This person interprets the situation differently. The weather is hot. The noise is loud. The smells are only a reminder of the cost of snacks and how much money will be spent on vacation. With financial worry constantly pressing a nerve, this person becomes irritable and unable to appreciate the beautiful and precious moments of the trip. You sympathize with this stranger because this person could have been you, if you hadn’t learned a better way to pay for travel.
How you pay for your vacation matters because it can affect how you feel and behave during your trip. If you’re not wasting mental energy worrying about how much money you’ve spent, or will spend when the bill arrives, you can focus more fully on enjoying your trip.

There are many ways to pay for a trip. Using the methods described in this book, I’ve planned and enjoyed several free theme park vacations. When I say free
I am referring to zero out-of-pocket expenses. I paid for all expenses using rewards earned from various programs. Paying for trips with rewards can be extremely satisfying, easy, and fun. I’ve written this book so that you can learn how to do it, too!
Sometimes people assume that there’s something unethical or fishy about using rewards programs. If you’re not paying the normal
way, and paying full price, then you must be doing something wrong. The recommendation to avoid things that sound too good to be true is sound advice, but it doesn’t apply here. It’s not too good to be true because you’re not getting something for nothing. You’re earning rewards by performing actions, like using a specific credit card for a purchase or taking part in a survey. You then use the rewards that you earn in the program to pay for specific purchases. It’s as simple as that, and there’s nothing shifty about it.
Here is a simple analogy to help you visualize the concept of using rewards as payment. You
