    OVERVIEW

    Alka Joshi, a native of India who immigrated to America with her family when she was nine years old, wrote The Henna Artist. Joshi began writing fiction in her fifties after a successful career as the owner of her own advertising business. The principal character in the author's debut work is based on her mother, who never had the opportunity to select her route in life but was adamant that her children should.

    In March 2020, The Henna Artist was released and quickly became a New York Times bestseller. The novel was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick, and a Miramax television series is now under development. In this study guide, all page references correspond to the book's Kindle edition from 2020.
