PROLOGUE
The narrator contrasts the swamp, which is gloomy, with the marsh, which is airy and full of flying things, in the prologue. Chase Andrews' body is discovered in the marsh outside of Barkley Cove on October 30.
CHAPTER 1
In 1952, a six-year -old girl named Catherine Danielle Kya
Clark watches as her mother, Marie Jacques Clark (nicknamed Ma
), walks out from the family's hut for the final time. Ma is likely to return, according to her elder brother Jodie, because mothers in the wild seldom abandon their children for lengthy periods.
Kya has reservations about him. The Clark family resides near Barkley Cove in the wetlands. The marsh is a no-land man populated by individuals who are either too desperate or too irresponsible to leave. It has its own set of rules.
Kya had spotted damage on her mother's forehead the day before, most likely from blows from Jake Clark (her father, often known as Pa
). Despite Kya's best efforts, Ma does not return, and the family settles into a new routine without her.
CHAPTER 2
Kya's siblings and sisters start to vanish one by one over the next few weeks. Pa's physical and verbal abuse has worn them down. The final person to go is Jodie. He instructs Kya to seek refuge in the marsh from Pa and any other visitors to the house. Pa goes on a drinking spree for three days, so Kya eats and looks after herself.
Pa returns and destroys the majority of Ma's belongings, including her paintings. By hiding out in the marsh and nearby woods, Kya learns to avoid Pa's strikes. Pa receives a minor disability allowance as a result of his World War II service. He offers Kya the money and tells her that in exchange for it, she must maintain the house for them.
Kya spends the money on meals at Barkley Cove. She encounters neighborhood youngsters and adults, all of whom shun her or refer to her as swamp trash
(18). When Kya buys grits at the grocery store, the clerk has to count out her change since Kya can't count past twenty-nine. Kya keeps up with the housework and tasks because she wants to maintain the house in good shape in case Ma returns. Her father is very seldom present. When Ma fails to return for Kya's sixth birthday, she is disappointed.
CHAPTER 3
On October 30, 1969 , two boys find Chase Andrews' body behind an abandoned fire tower in the swamp. They return to town to inform Sheriff Ed Jackson, who crosses the unwritten line between town and marsh to investigate because Chase's parents are prominent members of the
