The Spectrum of Light - Andrew Zellgert

    Diary Entry No. 1

    Hello Diary,

I have just entered the most peculiar of places. I find myself suddenly existing without any reasonable explanation as to why. A man named the Architect has just announced that I am about to be sorted into my category, whatever that means. I do not know how I feel about this whole business. It is almost as if I have been judged before I have done anything. Upon asking other people who are to be sorted, they just shrugged it off and walked away. I believe there is something important going on right now, I just can’t put my finger on what it could be. I do not even know why I am writing about this. I guess it is just a great way to vent my thoughts and I shall continue to do so as time progresses. We will have to see what happens from here onward.

Chapter 1: The Spectrum of Light

Hello there, Doris! said a voice.

Doris looked up from her writing and met the gaze of the Architect. His kind eyes and knowing smile comforted her and gave her reassurance she didn’t even know she had.

Are you excited for what lies ahead? asked the Architect.

I guess? asked Doris. To be perfectly honest with you, I am not even sure what to think of this whole situation. One second I am not here, and the next I am. What exactly is going on?

I just created you! said the Architect simply.

Doris frowned and looked around. Where am I? she asked curiously.

Ah! You are in the Between! said the Architect.

The Between? What exactly am I between? asked Doris.

You are between the place where I made you and the place where you shall go, said the Architect.

And where shall I go? asked Doris.

You shall soon see! said the Architect. Follow me!

They walked for a time until they came to what appeared to be a massive highway. Next to it was a sideways rainbow. A great sign, that read The Spectrum of Light, was next to the rainbow. As Doris and the Architect approached, a man with a hard hat walked up to them.

Hello, Mr. Architect, sir! said the man. He put down a stop sign and shook Doris’s hand. He smiled at her and said, And who is this?

This is Doris, said the Architect. The man nodded and began to walk with them towards the highway, but the Architect suddenly spoke, Actually, she will not be traveling down the Highway.

The man turned around and raised his eyebrows. I see, he said. Got plans for this one, then?

Indeed! said the Architect. He walked Doris over to the rainbow and said to the man, She will be traveling the Spectrum of Light.

    The man nodded. What color?

Hmmm…. Perhaps orange, responded the Architect. It is the color of fresh bread, bronze, and fire.

The man nodded. Alright! he said.

Doris, who had no idea what was going on, just went along with it because she trusted the man named the Architect. He had a kindness in His eyes that clearly spoke authority.

The Architect turned to Doris and said, To you I give three things. He revealed a small brain. My first gift is intelligence. May it serve you well when logic and knowledge fail you. He then pulled out a small magnifying glass. My second gift is observation. For not everything is the same and some things will pretend to be things they are not. He then pulled out a small brown sack and handed it to Doris. Do not open it, said the Architect in response to Doris’s curious fingers trying to pry the bag open. At least, not yet, He continued. This is my special gift to you. You will not know what it is until you discover it for yourself. Do not touch it until you know the time is right. He then backed up a little and said, And of course, you have the gift of my love and protection. Now, go! Explore the life that you have been given! Enjoy!

Doris excitedly raced over to the orange part of the rainbow and began to walk down it. She then stopped and shouted back, Is it possible to go to other colors?

Nope! said the Architect. I have chosen orange and orange is what it is. As I said, have fun! You will have to tell me about all your adventures next time we meet!

Doris nodded and without another word raced down the path eager to experience all of the things that the Architect had in store for her. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see that the Highway went a different direction. Wherever that went, whatever that mystery was, would have to be answered another time. After a little while of traveling she came across an orange backpack lying on the ground and she gratefully dumped her three treasures into it and hoisted the bag over her shoulder and continued her journey. The orange path appeared to stretch for miles and after a while, the other paths split off in their own directions.

Eventually, they were so far away that she could not see them at all.
