    CONCLUSION

    INTRODUCTION

As adults, many of us sustain soul wounds on our journey through life. It is in our human nature, during times of emotional upset, stress or loss to wound others especially those we love. Unkind words or actions, traumatic or upsetting incidences this can all cause us to be fearful, withdraw from life and lead to discontentment and depression. It is inevitable, at some point in our lives we will be wounded.

Many wounds, however, begin in childhood and while we may not remember the incident, we do have sensory or physical memories. When confronted with a specific situation, we instinctively react in a certain way. We may have been paralysed by fear at times because of something that happened to us years ago. Some people even dream about their fears or past events.

Wounds do not heal or disappear by themselves. The adage time heals all wounds is not true unless and until there is healing. We have a tendency to bury and ‘forget’ painful memories. However, when a situation triggers the memory, our old habit of thought and action takes over and we react from a place of hurt and fear rather than the current situation. Any form of trauma, as well as any form of abuse, is a wound. These wounds are much deeper and more difficult to reach, but not necessarily harder to heal. Our old patterns or templates of behaviour can change once we practice the art of healing.

What we fail to fix, we repeat.

This is the main reason why healing is so important. These deep-rooted emotions do not go away if those painful experiences are not resolved. They remain hidden, waiting for the right moment to reveal themselves.

But here’s the thing, we don’t need to ‘dig’ for wounds or look for them, they will appear naturally, without prompting and more often than not when we least expect it or wish for it! However, it is essential we address wounds that have surfaced or have been revealed because they influence our actions now and in the worst-case scenario, they will rot and become infected with the fuel of hatred, anger, bitterness and unforgiveness.

When we hear the word healing, we often assume it refers to the healing of an injury or the relief of pain of some kind. But what if the affliction doesn’t go away? What happens when doctors run out of solutions to the problem? What happens when the issue isn’t so much pain but constant confusion, unhappiness, anger or fear?

When we think of healing from an injury, we think of bed rest and taking it easy. Resting provides nutrients to help sustain us and aid in the body’s natural ability to repair itself. Occasionally, the trauma is so severe that surgery is required, as well as an active outside force to heal the wound. Friends and family play an intrinsic role in recuperation.

I am frequently asked if I must ‘believe in’ healing for it to occur. My response is straightforward. Have you ever felt as if someone is watching you? Are you always self-conscious in public? Do you often feel insecure or inadequate? All of these are indications of a natural sensitivity to our surroundings. We are more influenced by our environment than we realise, particularly by the people in it, who have the ability to change a situation, to their own advantage, through their thoughts and intentions.

We cannot heal in the same environment that has made us sick in the first place. Out of habit we take comfort in familiarity, we put all our effort into making the best out of our situation instead of moving on to new, unfamiliar and exciting possibilities. Sadly, the longer we stay in this toxic environment and we continue to inhale our toxic life the worse we feel. I am very familiar with these feelings, during the most troubling times in my life, I remind myself to look forward. I am aware that to live a truly harmonious, contented life I have to be resolute in my desire to leave behind the life that causes pain and anguish.

For years I thought I was doing the right thing but I continued to worsen. Then it dawned, when one hits rock bottom, you can find way out. You have to accept and acknowledge that you cannot heal in the same place where you have been hurt or around the same people who have hurt you. You can waste years fighting and trying to improve things but the fact is to heal you need a healthy new environment to start the healing process.

During our daily activities, our brains operate at a beta brainwave frequency. This is best for logical, time-sequential thinking, such as meeting deadlines, calculating income and expenses and managing our daily routine. When we are mentally and physically healthy, we can comfortably maintain this frequency throughout the day.

When we sleep, our brains shift to an alpha brainwave state, which is characterised by deep physical and mental relaxation.  Theta is intermediate between waking and sleeping and finally delta when we are asleep. The brain controls the rest of the body, when we are sick, when there is trauma or when we are in mental or physical pain, healing can only take place when the brain is in these resting phases.

While the alpha, beta, theta and delta states allow for healing, I have learned that it can be much more effective if the person has an open, optimistic mind and they can set aside their preconceived notions about how the mind, body and environment interact. With various forms of healing from
