In 1975, Nancy married Jim Elmer, and two months later, Layne was born. The children got along well with Layne, who was two months shy of his eighth birthday when they met.
#3
Layne’s interest in music was sparked in 1975 when he saw Elton John perform two nights at the Seattle Center Coliseum. He and Ken developed an interest in music during the late 70s and early 80s, and would listen to metal and hard rock.
#4
Jim and Nancy’s daughter, Jamie, was born in 1978. Layne was ten, Ken was nine, and Liz was seven. Jim credits Nancy with joining a support group focused on how to help or improve the parenting process.
#5
Layne began his freshman year at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood on September 8, 1981. He was one of the shortest boys in his class, and he had always wanted to be tall. He decided to stay in school, and began experimenting with drugs and music.
#6
Layne’s parents were always working, so he grew up with a lot of freedom. He was not a big fan of being around people, and he would often run away from home.
#7
Layne began working as a busboy and dishwasher at an Italian restaurant close to his home. He would do whatever odd job they gave him, but he didn’t have any skill or focus to work as a waiter or cook.
#8
The first song they played together was Mötley Crüe’s Looks That Kill. They were in heaven. They had found their singer.
#9
Layne’s voice was raw and unpolished, but it was impossible to compare it to the voices of past singers or his contemporaries. He didn’t strike his bandmates as Oh, this guy is a Jim Morrison wannabe, or Oh, this guy is a Robert Plant wannabe. He had his own thing.
#10
Rick Throm, the teacher, didn’t have many friends in the industrial woodworking class he was assigned to. He was a loner, but he listened to what others had to say and did what they said.
#11
Layne’s parents were supportive of his goals, and bought him a car when he was seventeen or eighteen years old. He had cleaned out the case containing the windshield wiper fluid, filled it with orange juice, and rigged the hose for the fluid so that it came out of the dashboard inside the car. He had turned the windshield wiper system into a drink machine.
#12
In 1985, the members of Sleze got together to perform for the first time. They were nervous, but they pulled off the performance. The four surviving band members don’t think Bergstrom forgot any lyrics or hit
