    LIVING THE RIVER

    Another beautiful day


    Waist wrapped

    with wreath of kelp

    she combs the wrack

    for tidal treasures.

    Part-filled with sand

    an amber cone-shell

    sounds low in the breeze.

    Glinting green, glowing glass,

    softened by surf and sand.

    And dried weed,

    worn wood,

    smooth stone.

    She picks them up.

    Puts them down.

    The girl smiles shyly,

    lowers her eyes.

    The sun greets her gently

    from an autumn horizon.

    To live is…


    To dream

    and sing a song by candlelight.


    To breathe the cool and salty air

    and feel the crunch of grainy sand.


    To touch the water and the wind,

    row a boat beneath the moon

    and sail a starlit sky.


    To climb a mountain topped with white

    and dip your
