Even My House Wears the Blues

Not always, but usually on Sundays

I hear the creak and moan

    of uncried tears

    tucked far away in the

    corner of the kitchen

    behind the

        stove

    where once a baby lay

        warming

        from a long winter walk

The attic was new 40 years ago

        built by a husband

        to shelter his

          wife’s secret treasures

            (love letters)

        before she left

          for some tom cat

        The hammer still keeps

    cadence

        early summer mornings.

    The old part

        the log cabin

        still with barked tree trunks

        nestled

          in the plywood siding walls

        burned once

    Late nights

    when the wind is still

        and the fireplace bare

    tendrils of smoke

        and crackles of flames

        can still startle
